Focus of this Module Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) Developmentally Appropriate Skills Teaching the Dimensions Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

4 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
Learning Outcomes After this module participants will have an understanding of: What FMS are Why they are critical The categories of movement skills Introduction to skill development Activity ideas Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

5 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
FMS Defined A common motor activity with specific movement patterns … which form the foundation for more advanced and specific movement activities (p. 253) Gabbard, C. P. (2000). Lifelong motor development. Toronto: Allyn & Bacon Definition found in the Canadian Sport for Life context paper Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

6 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
Why Are FMS Important? Fundamental Movement Skills Are the basic building blocks for the overall development of physical literacy Are critical for children to become competent in sporting activities Without them, many children and youth choose to withdraw from sport Much like learning the alphabet and phonics are needed to eventually read Shakespeare, or identifying numbers and learning to add and subtract are the fundamental skills needed to eventually balance a cheque-book. Without the development of fundamental skills, many children and youth choose to withdraw from sport and turn to more inactive and/or unhealthy choices during their leisure time. Using chart paper use long division skill without subtration... Lead into following slide.. Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

Canadian Sport for Life. Developing Physical Literacy: A Guide For Parents of Children Ages 0-12 Before moving on to the next slide, ask participants to reflect on the categories of movement skills Canadian Sport for Life. 8 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
Categories of FMS FMS include: Locomotor skills: consist of total body movement Stability skills: includes the ability to sense a shift in the body and adjust for it Object manipulation: a force given or received Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

9 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
If there is time do the following: Try and come up with some examples for each category Split participants into three groups—provide charting paper and markers. (6 groups possibly) Assign each group a category and have them develop a list 5minutes Have participants present their list, and review it with the lists on the following slides If time is tight: Do brainstorming as a large group Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

10 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
Stability Skills Body Rolling Dodging Balancing Bending Stretching Twisting Turning Swinging Stopping Push Pull Rise/Stretch Collapse Sway Shake Context paper Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

Locomotor Skills Walking Running Jumping (vertical & horizontal) Hopping Galloping Sliding Skipping Leaping Chasing Climbing Fleeing Context paper Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

13 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
FMS Progression There is typically a developmental progression amongst the skills Children must master certain stability skills before they can progress onto locomotor skills (Stopping involves stability) Manipulative skills are generally the last to emerge Skip for times sake Taken from the Canadian Sport for Life Context paper Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

14 Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
Let’s PLAY Round Up – Locomotor Skills Move to the Music – Stability Skills Clear Out – Object Manipulative Skills See games handout sheet Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

15 Conclusion/ Games Debrief
Fundamental Movement Skills are critical building blocks for physical literacy There are three categories of fundamental movements Locomotor Stability Object manipulation There is a developmental progression to when these skills begin to emerge Where to find these resources Do you have any questions?
