Sustainable Tourism The World Tourism Organisation defines sustainable tourism as: ‘Tourism which leads to the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic need can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems.’

In other words: ‘Tourism which meets the needs of present tourists and host communities while protecting and enhancing the needs of future generations.’ Watch video clip of Sustainable tourism.

Ecotourism: This is a branch of sustainable tourism. Watch clip on an Intro to Ecotourism.

The International Ecotourism Society’s definition: ‘Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people’.

The Ecotourism Resource Centre gives a more complex definition: ‘ Ecotourism involves visiting natural areas with the objectives of learning, studying or participating in activities that do not bring negative effects to the environment; whilst protecting and empowering the local community socially and economically’.
