Computer Science is not ICT! Computer Science is about: Algorithms Logic Binary arithmetic Storing numbers on computers: floating point numbers Problem solving
3
Using Excel Great for: Problem solving Statistics Forming expressions in algebra

Programming and maths Students will learn a programming language. The most common are: Scratch: first language many students will learn, often in primary. It is brilliant for developing reasoning about shape. Python: great for algorithms, and any number operations.

What you can do… Talk to your ICT department about how they can teach programming using maths examples. Learn a programming language yourself: whatever language the students are learning at school, so you can have them use it in lessons. When doing “functional” maths or problem solving: give students access to computers, making sure they know a few key points in Excel. For statistics, always give them access to a computer. Statistics is about interpreting data, not spending hours calculating stats. Twitter: @2ndarymaths Web: www.secondarymaths.com
