1 WESforD Wiltshire Early Screening for Dyslexia
Signposting to helpful resources We’re just going to spend a few minutes looking at well known Wiltshire Resource – despite being a few years old, it is still a really useful resource.

2 Aims To be aware of the Wiltshire Early Screening for Dyslexia Resources in WESforD 1 and WESforD 2 and how these can be used to support children.

3 WESforD 1 Key Stage 1 process
This is a staged process, along with a standalone set of phonological activities that are designed to be used in Key Stage 1. It starts by looking at possible causes and the resistance to learning. If a child is not making progress you would expect with aspects of literacy, you can complete a basic checklist to identify factors that may be influencing this. This is the Stage A check. Following this, a very basic assessment of phonological skills- Test of Phonological Skills- (syllabification, rhyme and phonemes) that can easily give an idea of any skills a child is having difficulty with. Directly linked with this are a set of easy to use games and activities to build the skills they are finding difficult. Once a period of time has been spent on these activities (a minimum of 3 times weekly for a month), the skills test can be re-done to assess for progress. This is the point at which the Stage B questionnaire can be used for those children who did not significantly progress via the support (further details in the file) This is the Stage B check and can provide a basis for moving forward with the child. The final part of the check looks at how the difficulty fits with a dyslexia. However, whether the need the child has presents as a dyslexic pattern or not, WESforD resources can be used to support them.

4 WESforD 2 Literacy Numeracy
Resources to support Dyslexic Learners in: Literacy Numeracy Cross- Curriculum Support, including planning, concentration, organisation skills This is how the WESforD 2 file is arranged. There is also a variety of assessment tools (that look at basic skills) at the beginning of the file that you may want to use – but it is equally possible to pick out resources to support a child that has a particular difficulty without using the complete procedure.

5 The Three Pronged Approach
Literacy/Numeracy Skills Independence Skills Remove Barriers to Learning Supporting children with these difficulties can be tackled using a 3 pronged approach: Literacy and numeracy will require structured and sequential programmes which are multisensory and have opportunities for overlearning. Children will need to be taught how to use support materials to foster independence such as word banks, dictionaries, planning tools etc. They need to be able to use them quickly and efficiently. In thinking about removing barriers to learning you need to consider how your teaching can be adapted and what strategies need to be taught. It can be useful to ensure planning is taking place in each of the areas, as all the skills are equally important.

HF words In this case, when reading with Betty she was not automatically reading HF words, so this was chosen as a focus. I suggested focussing on the 16 words identified as making up 25% of all literature. Spelling support When spelling, Betty needed support to break her words down and represent each syllable individually- her spellings did not contain sufficient syllables and she often missed vowel sounds. This skill can be supported by a WESforD resource and page 85. As Betty had accessed a lot of phonics based support and was now moving into Year 6 with limited progress in this area, it was felt that a whole word language based approach may be more beneficial. This is supported by some strategies on Page Some basic spelling rules are now part of the NC in Year 2 (such as adding suffixes etc. )
