Idea for the grant, spring 2014 “The Executive Board of SWON Libraries is pleased to announce our first ever Maker Space Grant opportunity.” “This project provides time and resources to implement a new academic program, Critical Making… Centering on disruptive technologies, in particular personal fabrication (e.g. 3D-printing, CNC tools) and computation, …emphasizes the process of creating physical and software artifacts for and with a community…” Conway Faculty Fellow: Gary Lewandowski, for project “Critical Making”

Faculty Collaboration & Support “Our partnership with the library is crucial because it provides us space for student work, additional assistance training students to use the tools… The 3D printer purchased with SWON library consortium funds provides an engaging entry into the area of personal fabrication for students and faculty around the university, and in particular will provide a crucial resource for the students in my course as they prototype and create objects from their 3D designs.” –Gary Lewandowski

Build and support a community of “makers” on campus Collaborate with faculty teaching courses where the creation of physical objects on a 3-D printer could enhance course objectives Provide the student employees in the IT division with the skills to use 3-D printers and other disruptive technologies Support the Computer Science program and collaborate on new “Critical Making” course
