Plot: the structure and relationship of actions and events in a text

Plot is usually illustrated with a triangle/mountain image.

The five plot points on a plot diagram occur in the order that follows: 1.Exposition 2.Rising Action 3.Climax 4.Falling Action 5.Denouement/Resolution

The exposition introduces the characters, background, and setting. ◦ Protagonist: main character, often (but not always) the hero of the story ◦ Antagonist: character against the protagonist, often (but not always) villain of the story ◦ Setting: the place and time that a story takes place

Conflict: struggle between opposing forces. ◦ Man vs. Man ◦ Man vs. Nature ◦ Man vs. Society ◦ Man vs. Self

Rising action: events which lead to the climax of the story

Climax: the highest point of action in the story

Falling action: events in the story that lead to the end of the conflict.

Denouement/Resolution: the end of the conflict
