Give examples of bias that we do not want to display. What is a “firm & controlled manner”? Give examples of excitable situations that require emotional control by officials. DISCUSSION NOTES:
3
“ ” Officials shall work with each other & their state associations in a constructive & cooperative manner DISCUSSION NOTES: Work in small groups of 3-4 and come up with examples to share with entire group
4
Officials shall uphold the honor & dignity of the profession in all interaction with student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, school administrators, colleagues, & the public How can we demonstrate courtesy, poise, honor & politeness? When we walk into the gym? When we are working the match? When we finish the match? DISCUSSION NOTES:
5
Officials shall prepare themselves both physically & mentally, shall dress neatly & appropriately, & shall comport themselves in a manner consistent with the high standards of the profession Clean, pressed uniform – shirt is white, not off-color nor stained This is more of a mental game, than a physical game. You cannot come to they gym with a personal agenda, or thinking about issues in your life, as it clouds your focus. Respect the art of officiating. DISCUSSION NOTES:
6
Officials shall be punctual & professional in the fulfillment of all contractual obligations Traffic in southern California Getting out of work or leaving home at a specific time you set Arrive early to get rid of your excess baggage & thoughts, so you can focus Set a goal to arrive early and review 1 rule of casebook questions prior to each match (you will be amazed at what you find) DISCUSSION NOTES:
7
Officials shall remain mindful that their conduct influences the respect that student-athletes, coaches & the public hold for the profession Everyone sees & hears what you do, and everyone has a cell phone/camera in the stands Don’t give them a reason to not trust your ability Demonstrate good stature and posture to “sell your ability” DISCUSSION NOTES:
8
Officials, while enforcing the rules of play, remain aware of the inherent risk of injury that competition poses to student- athletes. Where appropriate, they shall inform event management of conditions that appear unreasonably hazardous As you walk into the gym, make this the time you look for the hazards. No coach/AD wants to fix something at game time…Inform them at 25 minutes prior to the match, & they are more likely to cooperate. We don’t want to break up the flow of warmups while something gets fixed. DISCUSSION NOTES:
9
Officials shall take reasonable steps to educate themselves in the recognition of emergency conditions that might arise during the course of competition Be observant when odd situations arise Look at players who get up slowly or begin to look at their body (blood?) Look at the floor for sweat or blood Don’t be complacent when there is stoppage of play – scan the playing surface and check the net antennas Be prepared to identify that loud obnoxious fan or group to the on-site administrator (officials don’t handle any spectator issues) DISCUSSION NOTES:
10
OFFICIALS SHALL MAINTAIN AN ETHICAL APPROACH WHILE PARTICIPATING IN FORUMS, CHAT ROOMS & ALL FORMS OF SOCIAL MEDIA Be aware that what you post on Facebook or other social media sites could be shared through a “friend” with another “friend” who doesn’t like your officiating (they can Google your name – what will they find?) In pre-post games, be careful of speaking in a room/area with air ducts as the sound travels DISCUSSION NOTES:
