Certification vs Certificates
Experience/Education component For all skill levels Mastery/competency by standards Completion of a course Requires recertification Documents Course Knowledge Earned designation Listed on Resume / Proof of completion ASIS board certifications are ANSI accredited ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Certification has an experience and education component; certificates are for all skill levels. Certification indicates mastery/competency as measured against a defensible set of standards, usually by application or exam; a certificate indicates completion of a course or series of courses with specific focus. Certification requires recertification, which ensures that the certified practitioner stays current in the field through continuing education; a certificate is the end result; may demonstrate knowledge of course content at the end of a set period of time. Certification results in an earned designation to use after one's name (i.e. CPA, CPP, CAE); a certificate is usually listed on a resume detailing education; may result in a document to hang on the wall. ASIS board certifications are ANSI accredited, which ensures a high threshold of qualifications and rigor have been met when a practitioner earns their CPP, PCI, and PSP credentials. Board Certifications Certified Protection Professional (CPP)®- demonstrated knowledge and experience in all areas of security management Professional Certified Investigator (PCI)®- demonstrated education and/or experience in the fields of case management, evidence collection, and case presentation Physical Security Professional (PSP)®- demonstrated experience in physical security assessment, the application, design and integration of physical security systems, and implementation of physical security measures. Our requirements are demanding and consequently, our security certifications are held only by a distinguished group of professionals. Applicants must meet education and work experience requirements to apply for board certification. In addition, the comprehensive exam requires a great deal of preparation—a commitment of time and energy. *Responsible charge is defined as the charge exercised by an individual in a management position who makes decisions for the successful completion of objectives without reliance upon directions from a superior as to specific methods. However, an applicant need not have held a supervisory position, as long as the positions on which the application relies have specifically included responsibility for independent decisions or actions. If "responsible charge" is not based on supervisory responsibilities, then security program management responsibilities and duties must be clearly shown. Generally, this excludes such positions as patrol officer or the equivalent. Networking | Education | Best Practices | Standards
