The Realms of the Earth By Abhinav Krishna M VI - F

2 Realms of Earth The earth has the most suitable environment to support life. This environment has three major components that we call realms of the Earth :– Land or Lithosphere Water or Hydrosphere Air or Atmosphere These components under suitable climate make it possible for all life forms to exist on earth. All living beings exist in a narrow zone called the biosphere. The biosphere makes the earth unique as no other planet.

3 The Three Spheres of Earth
Lithosphere: Is the land on which we live. It is the earth’s solid outer layer or land consisting of rock and soil. It is also called crust. The crust is made up of two layers – The upper layer called ‘Sail’ and the lower layer called ‘Sima’. Hydrosphere: Is the water sphere which consists of water bodies such as oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, frozen ice, underground water, and water vapour present in atmosphere. The water cycle helps to maintain the supply of fresh water on the surface of earth. The heated ocean water turns into water vapour by evaporation process => Water vapour cools into minute droplets by process of condensation => On further cooling, droplets in clouds become bigger and fall down as rain by the process called precipitation. Atmosphere: Is an envelope of air that surrounds the earth. It is held in place due to earth’s gravity. The atmosphere is composed of Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, (Hydrogen, helium, argon, & ozone 0.97%) and carbon dioxide 0.03 %. The atmosphere helps maintain suitable temperature on earth and protects it from millions of meteors. BOISPHERE: All living organisms exist either on land, water, or air. The narrow belt of sphere between the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere in which all forms of life exists is called biosphere. Biosphere is made of distinct zones known as ecosystems, which in turn consist of physical environment (Land, Water, and Air) and biological environment (consisting of living beings).
