HOW INCREASING CARBON DIOXIDE DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE WILL AFFECT SOYBEAN Kaitlin Togliatti
2
Introduction There are many variables that can be looked at with increasing carbon dioxide concentration. Yield Leaf area index (LAI) Amount of leaf area per unit ground area Protein concentration
3
Experiment Methods Scientists have used many experiment methods to look at these changes in carbon dioxide concentration. Growth Chambers Open-top Closed-top Greenhouses Free air concentration enrichment (FACE)
4
Growth Chambers Can be placed inside or outside in fields No effects from weather Shows the highest increase in yield due to elevated carbon dioxide concentration Show a decrease in protein concentration http://www.knowledgescotland.org/userfi les/webFig7_Growth%20chamber.jpg
5
FACE Shows a smaller increase in yield Experiment type not used when looking at protein concentration LAI showed very little response. http://www.life.illinois.edu/bernacchi/Bernacchi_Webp age_files/SoyFACE.jpg
6
Key Points Yield will increase Leaf area index will experience very little change Protein concentration will decrease
7
Summary Soybean will experience differences with the increasing carbon dioxide concentration Chamber experiments do not accurately represent field conditions
