2 Syllabus Module description: –This module introduces the students to the principles and applications of computer files and databases, including the structures that are used with stored data. Module aim: –To introduce students to the principles and practice of handling stored data files and databases.

3 Module Assessment and Delivery Continuous Assessment (40%) End of semester written examination (60%). Further Details The module will run over one semester, with four contact hours per week: 1 hour of lecture, 1 hour tutorial 2 hours laboratory based practicals.

4 Learning Outcomes: On completion of this module, the student will be able to: –Demonstrate an understanding of transient data and the different types of stored data, giving strengths and weaknesses of each. –Describe the structure of data using flat files. –Open, read, write and close a flat file using a third generation language. –Describe the application and usefulness of a relational database. –Design and implement a small relational database, using a graphical user interface.

5 Learning Outcomes(2): Open and query existing databases using a graphical query generation tool and SQL. Populate a relational database with appropriate data, enforcing constraints, entity and referential integrity. Update, delete and query from a relational database, enforcing referential integrity. Write a description of the data stored in a database system, based on the data model. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a relational data model.

6 Learning and Teaching Methods: Lectures will be used to cover theory. Tutorials will be used to reinforce lecture and practical material and to help the students to learn to design appropriate stored data structures. Laboratory practicals will be used to demonstrate examples and for the student to acquire practical file and database handling skills.
