1 Department of Mathematics Graduate Student Orientation August 2014 Professor Richard Laugesen Director of Graduate Studies

2 Goal of the Ph.D. program – why are we here?! To prepare students for mathematical research and development, in industry, government, or academia.  Academic Mathematicians conduct research and train the next generation of mathematics teachers for elementary through high school levels. To teach mathematics well at the college level requires a depth of understanding that can comes from doing mathematical research.  Mathematicians in industry and government work in teams with scientists, engineers and financial analysts. They are responsible for creating mathematical models of situations of interest, and drawing quantitative conclusions from those models.

3 BEGINNING of PhD program  Comprehensive requirements – 5 courses - Math 500 Abstract Algebra - Math 540 Real Analysis - plus 3 more chosen from list of 12 approved courses Need A- or better (B+ is allowed for 2 courses). Or else pass the Comprehensive exam in the subject.  Math 499 (Introduction to Graduate Mathematics) Meet professors, hear about their research. Required in Fall and Spring of first year in PhD program.  Undergraduate complex analysis requirement (or take graduate course)  English proficiency for TAs - TOEFL iBT score 24 on speaking subsection, or else pass campus EPI test by end of second year.  No foreign language requirement Questions?

4 MIDDLE of PhD program  Take topics courses (Math 595)Math 595  Find an adviser, take a reading course (Math 597) - are you and the adviser are a good match?Math 597  Develop thesis project ideas. (Many advisers suggest problems.)  Consider Computational Science and Engineering OptionComputational Science and Engineering Option Emphasizes interdisciplinary and computational research.  (Internship in scientific lab or industry?)  Preliminary exam - the “thesis proposal” Student explains the proposed thesis project to a faculty committee. Questions?

5 END of PhD program  Thesis/dissertation research  (Participate in a summer school?)  (Speak at a conference?)  (Write a research paper and get it published?)  Job search  Thesis defense THEN A NEW BEGINNING… JOB AND CAREER Questions?

6 AFTER the PhD  Competitive job market – PhD numbers up 87% in last 10 years  Around 40-50% of graduates go to research/postdoctoral positions Consider careers in industry and government … e.g. seek a summer internship one year

7 Immediate concerns  Summer funding is not guaranteed. Save money during the year!  Sign up for comps (if taking this week) with Marci  Learn PhD Progress Requirements in Guide for Graduate Students Need 2 comps done by February 2015 (for GREEN status) or 1 comp done (for YELLOW status).
