Why would the author, Connell, decide to make these two characters have so much in common? The author, Connell, is matching them for the contest or game that lies ahead; he is making a statement about hunters or about privileged people who can afford to play games’ the fact that they are alike makes the contest more excited.

The author tells us that General Zaroff likes to hunt an animal that is very dangerous and not native to the island. General Zaroff has become bored with hunting, as he always gets with his quarry or prey. He may be hunting humans as they are dangerous, not native to the island, and can make his hunt different and exciting.
