What are viruses? Virus – microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell Smaller than bacteria Contain protein and genetic material Reproduce inside its host cell by forcing it to make viruses instead of healthy new cells Are NOT living

Lytic Cycle 1.Virus joins itself to a host cell 2.Virus either enters the cell or injects its genetic material into the cell 3.Virus genes take over the direction of the host cell and force it to make copies of the virus 4.New viruses break out of the host cell, killing the cell

Lysogenic Cycle Some viruses do not go into the lytic cycle In the lysogenic cycle, a virus injects a cell with its genetic material but the genes are inactive When the cell divides, each new cell gets a copy of the virus genes When the virus genes become active the lytic cycle begins
