INTRUSIVE ROCKS EXTRUSIVE ROCKS formed when magma hardens beneath Earth’s surface. formed when lava hardens above the Earth’s surface Example: Appearance: Igneous Rocks Formed by crystallization of magma

Classification of Igneous Rocks

CLASTIC CHEMICAL composed of weathered bits of rocks and minerals dissolved substances precipitate, or separate, from water Examples: conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, shale Examples:l imestone, travertine, chalk, gypsum, rock salt Appearance: course to fine grained Appearance: course to fine grained crystalline Sedimentary Rocks Formed when igneous rock is weathered and eroded and settles at the bottom of oceans and lakes.

Formation of Metamorphic Rocks 3.4 Metamorphic Rocks Contact metamorphism occurs when magma moves into rock. Changes are driven by a rise in temperature. Occurs near a body of magma
10
Formation of Metamorphic Rocks 3.4 Metamorphic Rocks Regional metamorphism results in large- scale deformation and high-grade metamorphism. Directed pressures and high temperatures occur during mountain building. Produces the greatest volume of metamorphic rock
