2 What is the European Institute of Innovation & Technology, EIT? Innovation is the key to growth, competitiveness and social well-being in the 21st century. The capacity of a society to innovate is crucial in an ever more knowledge-intensive economy. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) aims to enhance Europe’s ability to innovate, which translates into adapting quickly to the fast pace of development, being one step ahead in providing solutions to rapidly emerging societal problems and developing products that meet the demands and desires of consumers. The EIT is a body of the European Union based in Budapest, Hungary.

3 EIT Community KIC - A Knowledge and Innovation Community First wave launched in 2009 Energy Digital Climate Second wave launched in 2014 Health Raw Materials

4 EIT mission Europe faces a significant innovation challenge, despite an excellence research base, dynamic companies and creative talent, good ideas are too rarely turned into new products or services. Europe needs a change of mind-set towards the promotion of a more innovative and entrepreneurial culture. The EIT mission is to foster entrepreneurship and innovation across Europe.

5 Funding Model No research funding The EIT Funding model aims to: Boost innovation and to commercialize R&D results. Boost intra- and entrepreneurs through education and life-long learning. Implement the Knowledge Triangle.

6 EIT RawMaterials Committed to increased innovation capacity, competiveness and sustainable growth in Europe. Aims to strengthen innovation by introducing new solutions, products and services for sustainable exploration, extraction, mineral processing, recycling and material substitution. Expected to turn investment into tangible economic and social impact, including business opportunities, risk taking and entrepreneurial people contributing to sustainable economic growth. This, in turn, will boost the competitiveness of the European raw materials sector and generate new, high quality jobs. Focuses on commercialization of new products and services on a global market, business creation and SME growth.

7 Challenges are opportunities

8 EIT RawMaterials 8 Securing raw materials supply Designing solutionsClosing material loops Mission Goals To boost the competitiveness, growth, and attractiveness of the European Raw Materials sector via radical innovation and entrepreneurship. To c reate and develop new “game changing” businesses To boost the existing raw materials sector through the market introduction of new materials, investment in new production and processing units, system integration and the setting up of new partnerships To achieve a “paradigm shift” in raw materials education by introducing entrepreneurship, supporting the effective transformation of ideas into businesses

9 Focus Markets Material intensive Providing solutions for the raw materials sector

10 Knowledge and Innovation Themes De-siloing Value Chain thinking Exploration and raw materials resource assessment Mining in challenging environments Increased resource efficiency in mineral and metallurgical processes Recycling and materials chain optimisation for End-of-Life products Substitution of critical and toxic materials in products and for optimised performance Design of products and services for the circular economy

13 Northern CLC with excellence in Primary resources Exploration, mining, mineral processing and metallurgy; Equipment, tooling and machinery for mining, mineral and metal producing industry; Implementation of ICT-solutions for RM sector (process automation and optimization); Advanced practices related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Green Mining.

14 Northern CLC Mission (1/2) Establish an innovation hub of international excellence for Europe within Primary resources in Luleå including: Gateway addressing multidisciplinary perspectives in exploration, mining and new technologies, coordinating a gateway to Latin America. Gateway addressing Arctic resources and mining in the Arctic area, an important part of the EIP RM SIP. Establish a pre-incubator in Primary resources with competences and resources committed to the mining, mineral and metal producing industry. Create a Pan-European network of pre-incubators providing early access to new technology, entrepreneurial skills and networks. Build large scaled pilots through-out the value-chain implementing EIP SIP. Support SME willing and able to grow internationally.

15 Northern CLC Mission (2/2) Establish a European research supplier and broker B2B organisation, implementing new technology to industry. Install a pool of board members for SMEs providing relevant market and entrepreneurial competence, networks and potential venture capital increasing sustainability of the company. Implement adept/mentor programs boosting knowledge transfer, cross- fertilization, integration and innovation. Build Venture Capital for start-ups and SMEs with ambition to grow. Strengthen access to high skilled human capital within Primary resources contributing to international MSc.- and PhD. with double (EIT) degree in close cooperation with industry. Strengthen intra-preneurship through life-long learning, mentorship, entrepreneurial, technical and practical training.
