1
CEA-CREST Research Experience for Undergraduates: Sensors for Environmental Science/Engineering
2
REU Goal Develop/Build/Assemble/Implement sensors to monitor the environment Four projects –Building a flow-through arsenic/phosphorus sensor –Building a tram/UAV-based mini remote-sensing platform –Implementing a field-scale sensor network to monitor wave flow over a mussel bed –Building a manifold to sample and analyze combustion effluent Work in groups of scientists and engineers – one goal but separate and definable tasks
3
REU (cont’d) 10 weeks: Starting today through August 18 th 2 required field experiences (UCLA and UC Merced) 1 optional field sampling trip (Hot Creek) (Note: depends on funding) Will work directly with program directors and mentors
4
REU (cont’d) For undergraduates (need to graduate at the end of or after Summer 2006) For citizens or permanent residents Rules: –Can take classes but by permission only –Cannot work outside REU (unless absolutely necessary and with permission) –40 hours/week –Roughly a Monday through Thursday schedule
5
REU (cont’d) Grounding Workshops –Biogeochemical cycles –Research design and data analysis –Transport phenomena –Hands-on sensor development Diversity presentation (joint with UCLA)
6
