Nepal Earthquake Relief efforts by SAMAGRA

Direct, Collaboration and Coordination Immediately after the earthquake, SAMAGRA started relief efforts directly (providing materials and volunteers), collaborating with other organizations and coordinating with state/government’s agencies as well as its own Social Families. Firstly, communicated/collected the information using its local volunteers, the status of effects and needs. SAMAGRA’s central teams reached and had meeting with staff and other local agencies / people in each of the affected program districts. Reached and has been reaching the affected families with materials and also meeting & listening to them as the initial step of trauma- healing. Now, re-assessing the need at the grassroots to avoid the duplication and meet their real need.

Dhading – Kumpur, Gajuri and Reegaun In Kumpur VDC-3 & 4 (5 Social families of Irju, Hatiya, Bhaire danda, Katle danda and Khanigaun villages): Food packages containing 3,000 kg of rice, 100 kg of salt, 100 kg of sugar, 200 kg of daal & 100 liters of oil were distributed to 200 families. In Gajuri -1 (Ujyalo gaun, a village of all dalits): Food packages containing 990 kg of rice, 33 kg of daal, 82 kg of salt and 66 liters of oil were distributed to 33 families. In Gajuri -1 (Bhadaure and Admara villages, settlement of majority of Chepang and Tamang): Food packages containing 4,440 kg of rice, 149 kg of daal, 298 kg of salt and 149 liters of oil were distributed to 149 families. In Reegaun, SAMAGRA added some Tarpaulines in the packs of materials taken by other organizations. Similarly SAMAGRA coordinated with the government agencies and other non-government agencies to send food packages to the 4 northern VDCs of Dhading including Reegaun.

Dhading – Tasarpu and Thakre In Tasarpu 9 and 8, in collaboration/coordination with other organization, food packages (containing 20 kg rice, 2 kg daal, 1 kg salt, 1 kg sugar, 1 kg oil), tarpauline, blanket, foam mat were given to 400 families. 300 bundles of CGI roofing sheets for 5 common shelters and other individual houses have been given to 300 families and two schools. More are being distributed. They have already erected their temporary houses using these roof sheets and the woods from collapsed houses. In Thakre-4, Mathigaun (settlement of Chepang and Bhujel communities), food packages were distributed t 65 families. In this village, one pregnant woman died during the quake.

From Terai Social Families to Hill Social Families Social Families (mostly Dalits- Musahar, Dom, etc.) of Terai districts- Siraha, Saptari, Udayapur, Dhanusha, Mahottari and Sunsari, collected various relief materials and reached the Social Families of Gorkha with the truckloads of the materials. They handed over the materials at Khoplang for SFs of Khoplang, Chhoprak, Amppipal and Gorkha municipality-6 and at Benighat for SFs if Darbhung, Borlang, Fujel, Dhawa and Namjung. The materials included rice, daal, oil, bean rice, bhujiya, flour, potato, onion, salt, noodles, etc. This was not only the materials, but the love, care and cohesion among the Terai and hill SFs during such a calamities. SAMAGRA paid the transportation and helped for communication and coordination. SAMAGRA added the food packages to those families where there are more needs.

Northern Gorkha 300 Tarpaulins for northern Gorkha VDCs-Bihi, Prok, Lho and Samagaun have already been lifted by helicopter and distributed to those villages since the mule trails have been damaged at various place due to the land slides after the quake. Similarly, 400 bags of rice and other food items given by SAMAGRA are ready to be airlifted to those places.

Gorkha and Dhading – Arughat Area SAMAGRA collaborated and coordinated with other organizations and distributed relief materials (to more tha 500 families) including food packages (each containing 20 kg of rice, 2 kg of daal, 1 kg of salt, 1 kg of sugar, 1 liter of oil), Tarpaulines, foam mats and CGI roofing sheets (for 110 families) in the VDCs around VDCs of Arughat area, both sides of Budhigandaki river. Since this is very large and badly affected area, more help is needed and we have been coordinating for that.

In Tarachok of Bhulbhule VDC, almost all the houses have been damaged due the 3 rd quake. We are coordinating with other organizations to send CGI sheets there.
