2 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 1 Purpose › MIT President Susan Hockfield will convene the OpenCourseware Advisory Board for a half-day session on November 29, 2006 › Purpose is to provide strategic advice on MIT OpenCourseWare and the OpenCourseWare Movement. The Board will advise the MIT President, MIT Provost, and OCW Executive Director on key questions facing OCW › The OCW Advisory Board will be separate from and complementary to the existing OCW Faculty Advisory Committee, which focuses primarily on operational and MIT-centric issues

3 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 2 Key Questions › What should we be doing to further extend the global impact of OCW? › How can OCW support future innovations in teaching and learning? › What financial strategies should we pursue to sustain MIT OCW and the OCW movement? › How might we develop and leverage strategic partnerships to advance OCW goals?

5 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 4 Process › OCW Executive Director, Chair of OCW Faculty Advisory Committee, and OCW Communications Manager interview members › Discussions based on key questions  Majority of interviews by telephone, some in person  Three California members (Fiorina, Jones, Shultz) interviewed by teleconference on May 30 › Preliminary report presented to MIT Provost on June 1 › Final report presented to MIT President Hockfield on July 20, and circulated to Board members › Final agenda for November 29 meeting to be forged from report

6 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 5 Early Findings — Future impact What directions might OCW take in the future and how could these expand OCW’s impact? › Be thoughtful and deliberate in choosing a path for OCW › Lead and nurture OCW Consortium › Transform OCW into a global knowledge base › Develop educational communities › Consider OCW SE (Secondary Education)

7 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 6 Early Findings — Sustainability How can OCW remain financially secure into the future? › Obtain support from major donors and institutions › Provide fee-generating services › Develop a corporate underwriting program, along the lines of the NPR model

8 OpenCourseWare Advisory Board 7 Early Findings — November 29 meeting How can we ensure a successful outcome of the November 29 Advisory Board meeting? › React to proposals. Choose the most promising among the themes in this report and develop them into more substantive proposals ahead of the meeting › Assign pre-meeting “homework” to Board members to develop new ideas to present at the meeting › Demonstrate the impact of OCW through real-world case studies › Minimize presentations. Provide background materials in advance, including a guided tour of OCW Web site to familiarize Board members with OCW; do not take meeting time for this purpose
