Deciduous trees. Leaves pinnately compound & aromatic. Plants monoecious; staminate flowers in catkins; pistillate flowers solitary; apetalous Ovary inferior; 2-3 carpels with 1 locules and I ovule. Fruit a drupe-like nut with a dehiscent or indehiscent leathery husk; sometimes a winged nutlet. Julans “walnuts and pecans” Carya “hickories”
