Choking By the end of this session you will be able to: recognise when someone is choking respond appropriately to someone who is choking.

© St John Ambulance. All rights reserved. Choking What you will see: difficulty with speaking or breathing (mild obstruction) unable to speak or breathe (complete obstruction) red-purple colour around the neck and the face pointing to or grasping the mouth or throat.

Choking What you should do: ask the casualty “Are you choking?” tell the casualty to try and cough give up to five back blows give up to five abdominal thrusts repeat the cycle up to three times if abdominal thrusts have been used, and you are concerned, seek medical advice be prepared to resuscitate.
