Mentor “one who provides one-to-one support and attention, is a friend and a role model, and enhances a student’s educational experience.” Mentoring “meeting regularly over an extended period of time with the goal of enabling a special bond of mutual commitment based on the development of respect, communication and personal growth.”

Sarah Thompson, E-Mentoring Coordinator Expectations for Mentees Schedule your meeting times with your mentor in advance. Be flexible and have a variety of times you can be available. Be familiar with the industry and organization before meeting with your mentor. If you wish, you may write a brief letter of introduction before contacting your mentor by telephone or e-mail. Be on time. If you know you will be late, call and let your mentor know.

Sarah Thompson, E-Mentoring Coordinator Expectations ctd. Respect your mentor’s time - don't wear out your welcome. The average time for an information discussion is about 30 minutes. Be prepared to answer questions concerning your interests, values, skills and where you would like to use them. It is a good idea to ask your mentor for referrals to others who might be able to provide valuable information on the career(s) that you are considering. Submit mid and final evaluations

Sarah Thompson, E-Mentoring Coordinator Expectations of Mentors Meet online with the mentee at least once a week Establish a respectful, friendly, and communicative relationship with mentee Encourage mentee to establish goals and to work towards those goals Submit mid and final evaluations

Sarah Thompson, E-Mentoring Coordinator Group Pages Click on –Communication tab on left side –Group Pages –Your Mentor/Mentee Link –Group Discussion Board –Name of specified forum –Add New Thread Can log on to Blackboard at the same time or you can do a question/answer type format at your convenience Weekly suggested topic forums can be found here to help facilitate your relationship The Group Pages are only open to YOUR specific mentor/mentees – this is more private than the general Discussion Board

Sarah Thompson, E-Mentoring Coordinator Additional Suggestions Do not rely solely on Blackboard to maintain your relationship Use Blackboard for informational purposes and discussions Establish contact via email, telephone, messenger (if both have), or in-person Schedule a day-on-the-job if feasible

Mentees- contact your mentor and introduce yourself Familiarize yourself with Blackboard Set up an initial time or time-frame of when to check Blackboard (suggested topics will be posted every Monday) Take advantage of the knowledge you learn!
