1
From Earth to Atoms The Stuff of Life
2
Biosphere The part of the earth and its atmosphere in which living organisms exist or that is capable of supporting life. This picture illustrates the density of plankton in the ocean and vegetation on land
3
Ecosystem An ecological community together with its environment, (all of the living and non living parts) functioning as a unit.
5
The plants, animals, soil, air and water that interact in an area are all parts of an ecosystem
6
The soil itself is full of life. Bacteria, fungi, plant roots, insects, worms and other invertebrates. Millions of bacteria and fungi cells can be found in a table spoon of soil.
7
Community
8
The community is made up of the populations of all the living things interacting in an area. Community = Ecosystem – non-living stuff
9
Population A group of individuals of the same species living in one area
10
Individual organism A single organism (part of a population.) An Organism is a living thing
11
Other organisms A bacteria, mushroom and a tree are all examples of organisms
12
Cells Organisms are made up of cells Animal CellPlant Cell
13
Some organisms are single celled This is a bacteria cell
14
Organelles Organelles are the small parts of cells that perform different functions. Chloroplasts synthesize energy in plant cells The mitochondria is where glucose is “burned” to release energy to the cell
15
Molecules A molecule is made up of atoms These chlorophyll molecules help capture the sun’s energy in the chloroplasts.
16
This phospholipid molecules makes up an important part of cell membranes
17
Glucose is one of the molecules we use for energy
18
A molecules that helps determine who we are, what we look like
20
Atoms: The smallest unit of an element CarbonNitrogenOxygen Phosphorus
21
Sub atomic Particles Protons, Neutrons and Electrons make up atoms
