Summary Surface Lows tend to be east of upper air troughs. Troughs are cold. Cold surface Highs tend to be east of upper air ridges. Ridges are warm. Jet streams help air to move upward which helps create precipitation. Knowing where the surface Highs, Lows, and fronts are going to be means you can forecast using the Norwegian Cyclone Model.
