2. Thursday evening, 23 February 1905 in Chicago Thursday evening Paul P. Harris, fresh from a wild five years footloose and four years building a successful law practice, had an idea... It was regarding observations of success and respect which could come from organizing professional acquaintances. He had given this much thought by the time he and Silvester Schiele walked over to Gus Loehr's office, in Room 711 that cold winter night in 1905, almost 9 years from his arrival in Chicago. 3. Several weeks later, Schiele was elected the first president of Rotary as a courtesy since the meeting was held in his office. first president of Rotary Harris suggested several names, one of them being "Rotary."Rotary

4. Harris is elected the first president of the newly formed "National Association of Rotary Clubs" meeting in Chicago, 15-17 August, with sixteen clubs in Rotary.Chicago Paul Harris served two terms.

5. First emblem was a simple wagon wheel with a few lines – was said to illustrate “ Civilization and Movement “

6. In 1922 it was decided Rotary should adopt an exclusive emblem. Thus in 1923 the present gear with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted. After some advice from Engineers the “ keyway “ was inserted.

7. Rotary District 9790 as we now know it has a proud history. The Rotary Club of Albury is the oldest club which was admitted to Rotary International on 2 nd November 1927. In 1927 the district system was first introduced and Albury was in District 65, the territory being the whole of Australia.

8. Other clubs followed and between 1939 and 1948 six new clubs were formed. In 1949 the District 65 changed to District 28 being Tasmania, part of Victoria and part of New South Wales. Between 1949 and 1957 seven additional clubs were formed.

9. In 1957 District 28 changed to District 280 with the same boundaries. On July 1 st 1972 District 280 was divided into two and the clubs formed were nominated within the new District of 279. In 1977 the Districts were again renumbered and we became 979; there was one more change in the 80’s that saw the creation of District 9790 as we currently are.

10. 1972. District Governor - Alex Rigg. District 279 The District Governor’s Special representative for the formation of the new club was Past President Fred Page of the Rotary Club of Broadmeadows. His brief was to establish new clubs within our region.

11. Discussions took place with Mr. Ron Geyer – Sunbury’s newsagent In December 1972 an expression of interest meeting was held with the District Governor’s special representative and interested people of the Sunbury Township.

12. The interested people included among others:- Ron Geyer - Newsagencies Les Whorlow - Real Estate Agencies Jack Ford - Pastry Manufacturing Harry Kostas - Confectionery Retailing Jim Ireland - Flower Retailing

13. 1973. On the 10 th January 1973 District Governor, Alex Rigg was advised by Rotary International that a charter had been granted for a new Rotary club in Sunbury, making this the 34th club within district 279. On April 10 th 1973 there was a formal event attended by some 240 people and the Rotary Club of Sunbury officially commenced.

14. Since our inception Sunbury has had a proud record of achievements in our local community, the district that became 979 and finally its current zoning number 9790 and International projects. Sunbury was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Broadmeadows creating strong ties between our two clubs that need to be maintained.

17. Greenvale – in 2013 District Governor’s special representative PDG Mani Seneviratne Sangke Battambang in 2015 Club special representative PDG Mani Seneviratne

19. The club became involved in International projects with the contribution to FAIM projects in Madang, New Guinea and the hosting of a GSE team from Iowa, Missouri, U.S.A.. Locally the club supported the Red Cross Calling Appeal and arranged social evening for the residents who lived in Sunbury for forty years or more. The club was also extremely pleased to take part in the student exchange program in its first year, hosting Cristie Ocaya from The Philippines. 1973 – 1974RON GEYER
