Exerting Maximum Effort For Minimal Results Creative Card Placing Machine

Design Concept Review Quick Review Background Problem Description Mission & Approach Customers/Wants/Constraints System Benchmarking Metrics Functional Benchmarking Concept Derivation Concept Selection Budget Schedule

Background Exchange of Business Cards Is Commonplace in Industry Marketing Tool / Networking Aid Companies Seeking Creative Method Of Accepting Business Cards Differentiate Themselves Display of Creativity A Prime Example

Problem Description Needs: Develop a device to highlight GDA Digital Media’s functional creativity and celebrate a client’s visit Device will randomly place a business card on the wall in a method representative of GDA’s imaginative style Benefit: Device will convey GDA’s receptive and “down-to- earth” approach to business relations.

Creative Card Placing Machine Team 13 Members: Jeremy Garey, David Conway, Evan Kress, Rob Roche Customer: GDA Digital Media Advisor: Dr. Glancey Mission: To design, build, and evaluate an innovative, multi-step machine that accepts a business card and places it randomly in a defined area of the wall. Approach: The problem will be attacked through detailed problem definition and research. This will encompass identifying specifications, contacting customers, prioritizing their wants, and benchmarking existing solutions. Based on this iterative procedure, potential solutions will be developed and evaluated based on metrics. A prototype will then be constructed and tested.

Metric Refinement and Validation Lack of Engineering Specifications That Measure Creativity Presented Concepts to GDA Led to analysis of individual functions for specifics that make a design creative Based on Specifics Developed New Metrics Validated Existing Metrics

The Specifics - Metric Development Some Feedback Highlights Robot Arm more favorable than Bulletin Board Metric: # of hidden steps Tape/glue more favorable than push pin/pin board Metrics: % card defaced % card visible after attachment

Concept Generation Complete Solutions were developed with the top functional concepts Several of creativity metrics solely measure Rube Goldberg steps Therefore, all concepts that contained the top Rube Goldberg system ranked best

The Top Concepts Concept A Initiation: Card Placed in car and shot with pinball Placement: Robotic Arm Random Generation: Computer Attachment: Solenoid / Double Sided Tape Concept B Initiation: Card Placed in car and shot with pinball Placement: X - Y Plotter Random Generation: Computer Attachment: Solenoid / Double Sided Tape Concept C Initiation: Card Placed in car and shot with pinball Placement: Hinged Bulletin Board Random Generation: Air Table Attachment: Double Sided Tape

Concept Selection Metric Highlights Concept A 2 steps to initiate machine Concept B 2 steps to initiate machine The X-Y plotter acts in a linear fashion duplicates an action Concept C 2 steps to initiate machine The Air table hides attachment of card Has 1 hidden step Hinged Bulletin Board doubles required Volume ~ 4’x 2.5’x 2.5’

Concept A Five Major Functions: Acceptance - Two Steps Place card in car Pinball Plunger Rube Goldberg Highlights - 12 steps Car down a ramp Card in an elevator and on conveyor belt foosball player and ball Guillotine cutting Kenny’s head off

Concept A Random Generation Computer Generated Number C Program Use 1 serial port and 1parallel port Placement of Card Card positioned with robotic arm 2 Degrees of Freedom Planar Motion Driven by two stepper motors Card held to arm via vacuum suction Attachment The Critical Function Solenoid extends Vacuum turns off Tape adheres to wall

Budget Maximum $250 Most of our budget will be spent on materials and electronics for the robot arm. Detailed Robot Budget Stepper Motors $45.00 Solenoid $4.95 Micro-switches $6.00 Electronics(amplifiers, wires, transistors, etc.) $20.00 Aluminum Supplies $15.00 Belt $10.00 Gearboxes $20.00 Bearings $2.00 Computer donated Miscellaneous $20.00 Total $142.95

Budget Highlights Rube Goldberg Steps Parts needed: Conveyer belt, DC motors, aluminum, switches, electronics Estimated amount$50 DonationsKenny doll and foosball Framing for machine Parts needed: 2 by 4 boards, plywood, nails, and brackets Estimated budget$25 Decoration of machine Parts needed: Paint supplies, brushes and other supplies Estimated budget$20 Total: $237.95

Current Standing Thus Far Refined metrics for functional creativity based on GDA’s feedback of concept presentation. Re-evaluated concepts based on newly generated metrics in a iterative process. Selected best concept to date based on current metrics.

Future Goals Next Steps Devise a way to return GDA business card to visitor. Re-evaluate and update materials list and parts needed. Present current concept to GDA to receive feedback to continue iterative process. Re-evaluate current concept based on feedback received. Present to GDA again for further feedback to continue iterative process as necessary. Begin prototype fabrication
