David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 1 Super B US/Canada Meeting Introduction David Hitlin July 25, 2008

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 2 Introduction  Why we are here ?  The Super B project is gaining momentum, particularly within DOE, after a renewed emphasis on flavor physics by P5  Organizing the US (Canadian) physics community is obviously a crucial element in moving forward with DOE/NSF/(NSERC)  We hope today to take some strides in this direction  The program  Introduction - David Hitlin  INFN Status – Marcello Giorgi  The Super B Collider – John Seeman  The US Super B Project – David Leith  Discussion

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 3 Progress  [Marcello will fill us in on progress in Italy and the rest of Europe]  The recent P5 report recommends, in Scenario B and above, US participation in an overseas Super B factory  There are two proposals on the market 1. SuperKEKB, an upgrade of KEKB, with an initial luminosity of 1-2 x 10 35 and an upgrade path to 4-8 x 10 35 by 2027, using 83 MW 2. Super B, a new low emittance collider, with an initial luminosity of 10 36 using 17 MW, and an upgrade path to 4 x 10 36, to be built at Rome II University “Tor Vergata”, using many PEP-II components  If you’re interested in 1), you’re in the wrong meeting  US participation in Super B would leverage $270M of PEP-II and B A B AR components through an in-kind contribution  New funding of $10-20M/year over the TDR and construction period would also be needed to allow US participation in design and construction of the collider and detector upgrade

6 The North American flavor physics community  The current BABAR author list has 34 US and 3 Canadian institutions [henceforth rendered as 34(3)]  There is also, potentially, interest from the CLEOc, BES, CDF.D0,…….. flavor communities  Many institutions have, of course, made other commitments at LHC, T2K, etc.  The size of the overall Super B collaboration is bound to be smaller than that of BABAR, perhaps approximating the size of Belle  The Super B CDR had 65(5) signers from 12(3) institutions, including SLAC  A letter we sent to Steve Kahn and David MacFarlane in October, 2007 urging that Super B be a component of the SLAC PPA program going forward had 24(6) PI signers from 18(4) institutions, not including SLAC  It is difficult to project asymptotic numbers, but for the US, 100-150 faculty, postdocs and students seems like an achievable goal

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 7 Primary physics objectives of a Super Flavor Factory The crucial role that flavor physics will play in understanding New Physics found at the LHC is becoming ever more clear to the community (P5)  Sensitivity to New Physics at scales accessible to the LHC requires 50-75 ab -1 which can be provided by a collider with a luminosity of 10 36 in ~5 years  A polarized electron beam adds important and unique capability  Super B can perform measurements in the quark and lepton flavor sector such that:  If new particles are discovered at LHC we are able to study the flavor structure of the New Physics  If the New Physics scale is beyond the reach of the LHC, Super B can still explore the New Physics scale More specifically  Is there charged lepton flavour violation (LFV) ?  Are there new CP -violating phases in b,c or  decay ?  Are there new right-handed currents ?  Are there new loop contributions to flavor-changing neutral currents  Are there new Higgs fields ?  Is there new flavor symmetry that elucidates the CKM hierarchy ?

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 9 LFV in t decays: Super B capability Super B sensitivity directly confronts many New Physics models BABAR Super B sensitivity For 75 ab -1 We expect to see LFV events, not just improve limits

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 11 Flipping the helicity of the polarized electron beam allows us to determine the chiral structure of dimension 6 four fermion lepton flavor-violating interactions Polarized t ’s can probe the chiral structure of LFV Dassinger, Feldmann, Mannel, and Turczyk JHEP 0710:039,2007; [See also Matsuzaki and Sanda arXiv:0711.0792 [hep-ph]

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 12 Why do we need a very large sample ~75ab -1 ? Im (  13 ) LL Re (  13 ) LL SM Example: CPV in loop B decays Determination of coupling [in this case : (  LL ) 13 ] with 10 ab -1 and 75 ab -1 Im (  13 ) LL SMSM SMSM

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 13 SuperB + Lattice improvements Interplay between metrology and New Physics sensitivity Today  = ± 0.0028  = ± 0.0024  = 0.163 ± 0.028  = 0.344± 0.016 Improving the precision of Unitarity Triangle measurements, along with reducing theoretical uncertainties, can provide evidence for New Physics

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 14 CP asymmetries ( T -odd) in decays Bobeth, Hiller and Piranishvili have recently shown that CP violation beyond the SM can produce large CP asymmetries in the C 7,9,10 Wilson coefficients in decays. These can be disentangled in a model- independent way with an angular analysis in the low q 2 region Needs a sensitivity analysis

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 16 Moving forward  The proto-Collaboration (a rather small group) has already produced an impressive CDR  We now entering the TDR phase  TDR responsibilities must be worked out in the near future  These will evolve into project responsibilities over the next two years or so  INFN is beginning to provide R&D funding for Italian groups  Organizational activities have begun in Canada, the UK, and to some extent in France  It is a good time for interested US groups need step up to the plate  In the US there has been to date some activity in PID, EMC, trigger, computing and physics tools  On July 9, Hitlin, Jawahery, Leith, MacFarlane and Seeman met with a group from the DOE Program Office (Crawford, Debenham, Kovar and Nicholson)  They may see Super B as an important opportunity for the program  We were encouraged that if university groups expressed interest to DOE in Super B involvement, there would be a favorable response  NSF response as yet not well understood (NSERC ???)  INFN has formally requested the PEP-II/BABAR components  John Kogut (Dr. Electron) will shortly be making a presentation to SC-1 regarding Super B Factories

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 17  Raise your hands  Seminars  A classic method of spreading the word is seminars and colloquia at prospective collaborator’s home institutions  We need to develop a cadre of potential speakers to respond to requests  We need some requests  Get involved in the ongoing Super B meetings  Speak to your funding agency monitor  Flavor physics is no longer a taboo subject at DOE; they are likely to respond How do we proceed?

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 18

David Hitlin US/Canada SuperB Meeting July 25, 2008 19 Super B One Pager  Super B is a Super Flavor Factory with very high initial luminosity, 10 36, which can be upgraded to 4x10 36 in a straightforward manner  It is asymmetric : 4 on 7 GeV  Most of the ring magnets can be reused from PEP-II, as can the RF systems, many vacuum components, linac and injection components – as well as B A B AR as the basis for an upgraded detector – the net in-kind value is $270M  The high energy beam can be linearly polarized to ~85%, using the SLC laser gun  This is particularly important for confronting New Physics in  decays  The primary E CM will be the  (4S), but Super B can run elsewhere in the  region, and in the charm &tau threshold regions as well, with a luminosity above 10 35  One month at the  (3770), for example, yields 10x the total data sample that will be produced by BEPCII  Super B will be built on the campus of the Rome II University at Tor Vergata  There is an FEL already in the early stages of construction on the site  Tunneling will continue to dig the Super B tunnel, funded by Regione Lazio  Time scales  (Successful) conclusion of the European Roadmap process (INFN, ECFA, CERN Strategy Group) by early 2009, followed by INFN  Ministry  TDR effort is beginning: construction 5 years : luminosity in 2015-16
