Exporting NICE/NT to other Institutes: Bologna, INFN, CIEMAT Gian Piero Siroli, Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Bologna and INFN HEPNT Days, CERN, Geneva
2
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Porting - phase I (LAN) u Physics Department at University of Bologna and local INFN branch u total of about 200PCs installed and managed individually u More heterogeneous environment than CERN, different services, different language for O.S. and applications u Replica of NICE application server u Hard disk shipped and then resynchronized over the net u ~8GB compressed (~11GB total) on NTFS (being tested also at CERN, currently Netware based) u Local installation of NICE (source) u 5 nodes dedicated domain, 10BaseT Ethernet LAN u Site specific code dependencies resolved on 6 projects
3
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Phase I (LAN) u Site configuration u Security related issues (pair SiteKey/MagicKey) u User creation and configuration u NICE services u Replicated: Application Support, Scheduled Job Service, Extensions to “System Policies”, Broadcast Message Service, Server Replication Service, Accounting Service u Not replicated (because of no immediate interest or CERN specific): Automated Client Installation (Netware), User Registration (private version), Printing Support
4
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Phase I (LAN) u Post installation u Integration into NICE running 2 executables (remote maintenance, NICE desktop installation) u Update shortcuts, some applications removed u Accounting Service reconfigured u W/95 PC reinstalled with Italian version of O.S. (for administrative staff) u Logo modification u Applications starting correctly u Fail-over test PDC-BDC and back u Byproduct: some CERN related services immediately available (mail, CERN phonebook, news)
5
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Phase II (WAN) u INFN Computing Committee Working Group u Feasibility project of porting and extending NICE infrastructure within INFN (26 sites and 4 labs) u Possibility to manage PCs in remote sites with very little or no local manpower u Possible mechanism for collaborative work and integration of computing tools within HEP collaborations u INFN-NICE test domain u One single 18 nodes domain over WAN (<2Mb lines) + 1 resynchronization node on a dedicated domain u 3 BDCs, 3 NICE Application Servers, 2 Home Servers
6
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli INFN-NICE test domain
7
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Phase II (WAN) u Tests, problems and evolution: u Remote authentication over WAN (even with only one PDC/BDC) u Correct behavior if PDC temporarily unavailable u Very slow remote application execution => application servers installed at remote sites u Home servers installed at remote sites u Centralized accounting over WAN after reconfiguration u Site random load balancing and temporary fail-over to remote application servers (if needed) u Complete resynchronizations (3 times) of applications and NICE source over the net
8
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Domain architecture (WAN) u Goal: minimize overall management load u Personal desktop should follow users on any INFN site u Sites must be independent for low level management u 1 single domain: centralized management for high level functions (synchronization, homogeneity of services, security) and better optimization of resources u N domains: complete site independence, trust relationships, security u Models: Single Domain, Single Master Domain, Multiple Master Domains, Independent Domains with trust rel. u Consequences on synchronization procedures
9
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Resynchronization u Periodic resynchronization with CERN u Applications (reference server) u NICE source (recompile and reconfigure) u Scheme depends on domain architecture u Semi-automatic procedure under development
10
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli INFN-NICE Architecture INFN Reference Server Appl. Server Site 1 Appl. Server 1 User Appl. Server 2 User Home Server Administrator INFN Synch. Server CERN User Site 2
11
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli More topics u Accounting and license control u Important for heterogeneous environments and different institutions u Printers configuration u Printer Wizard or native W/NT printing tools u Generic NICE configuration for sites or institutions outside CERN u Servers, accounting, synchronization, application menu u Installation disk
12
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli CIEMAT / CENIT (I) CIEMAT / CENIT (I) CENTRO de Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (Madrid) u Under deployment u Currently running on 60 PCs; 100 to 120 by next week, more will be integrated later u Switched Ethernet LAN; maybe another site in the future u NICE installation disk generated for 3 models of 3COM network cards u TCP/IP protocol, NTFS file system u Printer Wizard: UNIX server running Samba
13
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Computación en un ENtorno Integrado de Trabajo
14
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli CIEMAT / CENIT (II) u Roaming profiles u Spanish version of W95 and some applications u Developed Visual C++ application for user registration u Automatic procedure to integrate PCs running Win3.1
15
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Summary (I) u NICE ported to 2 different environments: Phys. Dept. and Research Center u Relatively easy porting and configuration (few days) u Little new code development for non ported services u “Development/Test” systems in production with satisfactory results u Extension to WAN u “Stretching” of original CERN-NICE architecture u Positive tests u Domain architecture: Single Domain u INFN W/G proposal: endorsement of CNTC, decision in a short time by CC
16
HEPNT Days, CERNGian Piero Siroli Summary (II) u Overall positive experience u Very flexible original NICE architecture u Robustness u Easily exportable: tools and procedures under development to automate installation of NICE in a non- CERN environment
