2 RESEARCHING TOPICS Use Search Engine Tools such as Twitter search and HashtagsTwitter searchHashtags Look for useful sources. Tweetstats will measure the keywords most often used by the experts in your field. Tweetstats Trending Topics on Twitter…if you want to find out what’s current and topical. Trendsmap- Maps what’s being tweeted and where Trendsmap Tweetometer – measures amount rending of tweets correlated with place. Designed to create source of data that can be mined. (Crowdsourcing) Tweetometer

3 ACADEMIC INTERACTION Join the Research community (#phdchat #twitjc ) Build up a presence. Tweeting, Retweeting. Commenting Interact – know what’s going on..follow conferences, check out papers. Staying alert. Alerting others from conferences /seminars you’re attending Ask your research related questions and you may be answered. Twitter is full of helpful people who may know more than you…Free Advice...may lead to Collaboration.

4 ACADEMIC INTERACTION CONT. Find participants to recruit for studies and surveys. Find out what the competition is up to. Skulk or Strut ? Network – Twitter is a networking tool. Meet people with similar interests. Follow to be followed-Reciprocity.

5 DATA MINING Use Twitter to obtain data from a survey… It’s a micro blogging site you can use to get participant responses. Data aggregation –many people syndicate their twitter feeds to Friend Feed. Results aggregated in a central location. Twitter is a real time global thought stream…which becomes an archived source of historical information.

6 ACADEMIC PROMOTION AND DISSEMINATION Use Twitter as your showcase. Share your ongoing research and findings. Use Twitter to trailer your blog. Advertise upcoming/existing articles etc. Use Twitter to promote citation and hits to articles/ theses. Non academics like Twitter’s brevity /immediacy (e.g. Sell an idea to business)
