1 Immigration Unit Vocabulary By Ms. De Saro

2 Immigrant A person who comes to a country to make a home. The immigrants who came to New Jersey were from Ireland, Greece, Russia, and many other countries.

3 Emigrate To leave one country or region to settle in another one.

4 Steerage The lowest priced ticket, also called 3 rd class. It is at the bottom level of the ship. Most immigrants could only afford a steerage ticket.

5 Custom A special way of doing things. Different groups of immigrants had different customs. There are customs for religion, marriages, and for other celebrations and parts of family life.

6 Ellis Island An island of Upper New York Bay southwest of Manhattan. It was the chief immigration station of the United States from 1892 to 1943. Officially closed in 1954, the site was designated a National Monument in 1965, and the main building was opened to the public as a museum in 1990.
