8. Biblical Support for Evangelistic Assumptions of the seeker church

8.Biblical Support for Evangelistic Assumptions of the seeker church A. God is at work in the lives of non-believers and invites us to join Him. “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5: 18-20a, NIV). “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. 8.Biblical Support for Evangelistic Assumptions of the seeker church B. Non-believers are curious about and interested in spiritual matters. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9, NIV). (2 Peter 3:9, NIV).

8.Biblical Support for Evangelistic Assumptions of the seeker church C. Non-believers must overcome specific barriers related to the gospel. “salt of the earth... and the light of the world” “salt of the earth... and the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14, NIV). (Matthew 5:13-14, NIV).

For most non-believers the conversion process is lengthening. “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17, NIV). (Romans 10:17, NIV).

8.Biblical Support for Evangelistic Assumptions of the seeker church E. Non-believers are most often reached relationally. “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him. `We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus” (John 1: 40-42, NIV). “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 9. Some Positives and Negatives of the Seeker-Sensitive Church
9
A. Some Positives A-1. It creates an opportunity to mobilize a large number of people from day one in the very mission of the church. A-2. It provides a safe place for the unchurched to hear a dangerous message through a specific service A-3. It has an intentional strategy for making disciples.
10
A. Some Positives In Sum, We can affirm several positives. The "seeker- sensitive" movement has forced us, in various ways, to think more seriously about outreach designed to find those who do not attend church at all. It has led many to think more clearly about good communication skills and how we are being heard by the unbeliever in our age. We can affirm several positives. B. Some Negatives. B-1. A major capitulation to consumerism has occurred. This consumerism creates several serious problems: This consumerism creates several serious problems: (1)casual shoppers with a narrow perception of church and sacrifice; (2)a minimizing emphasis on truth, especially truth which offends modern consumers; (3)services and church programs built around "meeting people's felt needs" as an end in itself.
12
B. Some Negatives. B-2. It also has another problem that it cannot be called worship. They think that although true worship has to be God-centered and the people must serve God and give thanks for God’s grace, there is no such idea in the seeker sensitive services. In addition, they believe that while true worship is a response to God’s revelation for his people and God himself, seeker sensitive services is just human service for the seekers. B. Some Negatives. B-3. Seeker sensitive services have a disadvantage in that it fosters passive participation of congregations. Most congregations in the service do not know the difference between worship, praise, and prayer. For this reason, we cannot expect their active participation in the service. As the result of that, every action of service is performed on stage and the congregations just watch or enjoy such performances on stage with folded arms. In conclusion, even though seeker sensitive service has some disadvantages and dangers, it has, in the missionary aspect, some more advantages which churches can easily approach to non-believers. Thus, I think that we need to use it for spreading the gospel. However, I feel that definition of the term has to be renewed first. What is obvious is that worship is different from a gathering for evangelism. Thus, I think that we need to use it for spreading the gospel. Since the seeker sensitive service just like a meeting for evangelism has to be distinguished from worship, it should be used for settlement of Christian culture and spreading gospel in the world. Worship has to be God’s people’s response to love and grace of God. On the other hand, seeker sensitive worship, a tool for evangelism, is focused on non Christian, not God himself. They are seekers just like guests coming to church. Therefore, I want to say that the service for them should be essentially different from God centered worship.
