History Nokia’s roots go back to the foundation of the Nokia wood-pulp mill in 1865. Nokia took their current form as a corporation under the laws of the Republic of Finland in 1967, upon the merger of three separate Finnish companies involved in a range of industries. In the 1980s, Nokia strengthened its position in the telecommunications, consumer electronics and personal-computer markets. In 1982, Nokia introduced the first fully-digital local telephone exchange in Europe, and the world’s first car phone for the Nordic Mobile Telephone analogue standard. In the early 1990s, Nokia decided to make telecommunications its core business. As a result, Nokia divested a number of other businesses, including paper, rubber, footwear, chemicals, cables, aluminium and television. Nokia’s decision to focus on telecommunications proved a visionary one. Following the rapid growth of the industry over the past 15 years, nokias mobile devices are now used by virtually every demographic segment of the world’s population.
