Health-Grids in the United States Steps Required to Make Health-Grids a Reality By Bardiya Vaziri
2
What is a Health-Grid? All grids bring together separated resources to work towards a common goal A health-grid brings together doctors, technicians, specialists and other healthcare providers, as well as a huge pool of data – Data includes patient records and patient genomes
3
Current Situation in the United States Less than 20% of doctors have electronic health records – Only 4% have a system that lets them view lab data, order prescriptions and help make clinical decisions – Over 80% with records say it helps Why don’t more doctors have electronic health records? – Cost, privacy concerns
5
Akogrimo Scenario "Access to KnOwledge through the GRId in a MObile World" Goal is to quickly respond to heart attacks and strokes Focused on mobility – Patient would carry portable monitoring device Device may provide EKG or other vitals Device would be interfaced with patient’s cell phone – In the event of an aberration patient would talk with an emergency operator – Benefits of the grid are seen when the patient’s health record is easily accessible to everyone dealing with patient
7
Healthcare provider concerns Increased liability issues – Malpractice – Data security Low incentive currently Health monitoring service has potential to be very profitable Being on grid ought to be optional
8
Patient Concerns Keeping data securely stored and transmitted – What happens when security is compromised? Restricting access to data once it has arrived – Records need to be kept regarding who had access to what data – Records of patient consent need to be kept Ability to withhold certain aspects of health record from the grid
