7 Real-time data based weather alerts
Relative Humidity Wind speed Wind direction Fuel moisture Trigger real-time computer-generated alerts, if: condition “A” AND condition “B” AND condition “C” OR condition “D” exists, in which case several San Diego emergency officers are being paged or ed during such alert conditions, based on HPWREN data parameterization by a CDF Division Chief. This system has been in operation since 2004. Date: Wed, 4 Aug :31: Subject: URGENT weather sensor alert LP: RH=26.1 WD=135.2 WS=1.9 FM=6.8 AT=80.7 at More details at

8 Accomplishment based renewal
National Science Foundation support since inception: 2000 $2.3M Original award 2003 $0.42M Supplement 2004 $3M ITR research award (after two failed proposals) Total spent NSF investment: $5.72M September 2009 to August 31, 2011 $1M Accomplishment based renewal (after two failed proposals) Total awarded NSF investment: $6.72M

9 FY2011 budget (total: $538,556) Staff: Hans-Werner Braun Jim Hale
Kim Bruch (part time) Ron Serabia (part time)

10 Issues It is unrealistic to “just leave network in place” tower rental
we are hosted by several agency towers network needs to continue to be professionally managed Some feedback from NSF most cyberinfrastructure money is in domain directorates, and not OCI if the network is so important to NSF awardees, they need to make its support a line item in their proposals to their appropriate domain directorate/division Given those premises, an HPWREN Sustainability Working Group had been created as a result of last year’s HPWREN Users Workshop to evaluate realistic long term sustainability models for basic network upkeep
