2nd Nov 2007Jérémy ARGYRIADES DUSEL Town Meeting 7 The BiPo decay 212 Bi from Thorium decays 1/3 into 208 Tl, 2/3 into 212 Po The BiPo detector measures the e - from 212 Bi --> 212 Po, and after ~300ns the α from 212 Po --> 208 Pb 2 plates of plastic scint. 2β source between them 20 optical guides + PMTs

2nd Nov 2007Jérémy ARGYRIADES DUSEL Town Meeting 10 Conclusion SuperNEMO has to pass through 3 major difficulties : Source purification : both Se and Nd purification techniques have been developed for big quantities, but the result has to be tested in the BiPo detector Energy resolution : liquid scintillator is achieving a energy resolution of 7.3% at 1 MeV whereas 7% is aimed Radioactivity measurement : the BiPo detector is already close to the requirement : A( 212 Bi 212 Po) < 20 µBq/m 2 A( 208 Tl) < 10 µBq/m 2 instead of 2 The improvement of the position resolution should increase this sensibility until 2 µBq/m 2.
