Implementing CIP 2010 SUNY AIRPO January 22, 2010
2
CIP 2010 Decennial revision of CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs) Structural as well as idiosyncratic changes Accounts for new fields, changes, deletion of old titles Needs to be implemented for 2009-2010 Completions cycle Needs to be accommodated in both legacy and SIRIS environments (APIS and APES)
3
Key Points: Overwhelming majority of CIP codes unchanged Some small number of structural changes (e.g., Nursing) Many new fields since 2000 CIP (e.g. Homeland Security & related programs, Nanotechnology) Some moves/deletions Details at http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/default.aspx?y= 55 or use Go to CIP 2010 User Site from the Data Provider Center page of the IPEDS website http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/default.aspx?y= 55Go to CIP 2010 User Site http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/default.aspx?y= 55Go to CIP 2010 User Site

SUNY Implementation Each SUNY academic program assigned a six-digit CIP code in APIS (legacy) and APES (SIRIS) Structural changes (i.e. those which can be cross-walked) can be handled by system programming here Idiosyncratic changes handled by review at campuses and system admin Some examples…
5
Structural Changes Nursing – 51.16xx in CIP 2000, will now become 51.38xx (RN, specific programs) and 51.39xx (LPN) So, for example, Nurse Anesthetist maps from 51.1604 to 51.3804 algorithmically, without needing to examine the particular program
6
Idiosyncratic Changes New fields come into existence – example, growth in Homeland Security fields since 9/11 Now have specific CIP codes for fields such as Cyber/Computer Forensics (43.0116) Financial Forensics & Fraud Investigation (43.0117) Homeland Security (43.0301) Terrorism & Counter-terrorism Operations (43.0304) If you currently have a program in one of these fields, it’s in 43.9999 But, we can’t map to new codes via an algorithm…
7
Idiosyncratic Changes (con’t) Because, 43.9999 is still a valid code, Some programs in 43.9999 will stay there, Other programs in 43.9999 will move to different new codes So, campus and system must review these (and other) programs to see if there is now a better, more accurate fit in a six-digit code. (Which is true of every major CIP revision)
8
Tools for review: Legacy systems – Appendix C – lists programs and their various codes, including CIP code SIRIS – Academic Programs Campus View – use “advanced search” function, choose your campus, and generate a similar list BUT… doesn’t currently display CIP code – we need to add this. (To save you from opening up each individual program!) Review/suggest changes to System Admin, and we will process here.
9
CIP Code Assignments: Done initially by System Admin as programs are proposed/approved Highly encourage campus input – you know program content best of all Assign at System to maximize consistency across SUNY, but recognize that program content ultimately trumps consistency Hopefully, SED will eventually make the assignment as they do HEGIS code for state- wide consistency
