Making Connections Case Study: History facility of a document producing system, with a broad understanding of the concept of a “document” Questions: 1.How do we understand the system in light of our approach based on models? 2.Does this understanding change depending on physical size of the system hardware?
7
History in a Document System Potential ways to model or describe the history system. – GOMS – Fitts’ Law – Cognitive dimensions – GUEPs – Task analysis – PIE model – Other ways of understanding
8
History in a Document System (2) Rough description of history: What does, or should, the history do? How is it invoked? Model of history: Use a formal structure: a “mathematical” approach Use GOMS: an interface modeling approach
9
History in a Document System (3) Design of history What does the interface look like? – What commands are provided? – Do the commands for the PIE model match the operations for the GOMS model? – What adaptations are available for a small device?

History in Other Settings Web browsing Single task systems, as opposed to a multitask system: iPad vs. Mac, for example Others?
