Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Virtual Server will be available to customers in two editions: – Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise – Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Standard Features are the same, scalability is the only difference. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Standard supports four processors and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise supports up to 32 physical processors. 5 Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on the same processor Each independent virtual machine functions as a self-contained computer Run side-by-side testing and production systems on the same machine –Use off-the-shelf servers –Use fewer servers with higher utilisation Allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on the same processor Each independent virtual machine functions as a self-contained computer Run side-by-side testing and production systems on the same machine –Use off-the-shelf servers –Use fewer servers with higher utilisation

Microsoft Virtual PC Similar to VS 2005 VPC client-based virtual machine products make it possible to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on one workstation. Virtual machine products are often used to run applications that are only compatible with a specific version of an operating system –(e.g. an accounting system that only runs on Microsoft® Windows® 98), and to test applications on different versions of an operating system. 7 Windows Desktop Licensing and Virtual Machine Products Except under volume licensing each copy of a Microsoft Windows Desktop Operating System that is running on a single physical computer, including a computer using virtual machine software, must be separately licensed. Upgrade license acquired through volume licensing grants rights for the customer to install up to two instances of Windows Professional on one desktop. –The two instances may be two different versions of Windows Professional (e.g. Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Professional) Except under volume licensing each copy of a Microsoft Windows Desktop Operating System that is running on a single physical computer, including a computer using virtual machine software, must be separately licensed. 8 Examples of Virtual Machine Technology

Example 1: Customer migrates a legacy line-of-business (LOB) application from a one-way server computer running Microsoft Windows NT® Server 4.0 to a two-way computer running the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system with a virtual machine running Windows NT Server 4.0.

Microsoft Product Licensing Requirements * If the Windows NT Server 4.0 license cannot be reassigned from other server, a separate Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition license acquired through Volume Licensing will permit a downgrade to Windows NT Server 4.0. Product# of Licenses Required Windows Server 2003 STD1 Server license Windows NT 4.0 Server *1 Server license 1 x Virtual Server 2005 or other virtual machine software license

Example 2: Customer deploys Microsoft BizTalk® Server 2002 Enterprise Edition (EE) on two virtual machines. Each virtual machine is running the Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server operating system, and the server computer is running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Each copy of Windows 2000 Server on the virtual machines uses both processors in the computer. Customer deploys Microsoft BizTalk® Server 2002 Enterprise Edition (EE) on two virtual machines. 15 Frequently Asked Questions

May I move an OEM license for Windows Server to a virtual machine? You may not transfer original equipment manufacturer (OEM) server licenses from the original computer to a different computer. However, if you have acquired Software Assurance for this preinstalled license, you receive the rights associated with the Volume License program, including license reassignment. You then would be able to move that license and Software Assurance from one computer to another, including a VM. 17 How many Windows Server licenses do I need for my virtual machines? Each installed copy of Windows Server must be separately licensed. If setting up four virtual machines to run one instance of Windows 2000 Server and three instances of Windows NT Server 4.0 you will need; –one Windows 2000 Server license –three Windows NT Server 4.0 licenses –Windows Server 2003 license –Virtual Server 2005 license Each installed copy of Windows Server must be separately licensed. 18 Can I run an server application that requires Windows NT Server 4.0? Windows Server 2003 and Virtual Server 2005 can host the application and Windows NT Server 4.0 as a virtual machine or guest. You would need to also license the application. Running legacy applications in a virtual environment does not extend their support life cycles. Running legacy applications in a virtual environment does not extend their support life cycles.

What are the CAL requirements for virtual machines? Client Access License (CAL) requirements are based on the applications that you are running within the virtual machine. However, a Windows Server 2003 CAL will be required for each user or device that accesses the VM because it is running on the host operating system, which is Windows Server 2003. 20 Does other Server software require licensing? Each server application and/or server software installed through a virtual machine must be properly licensed according to the terms & conditions of their EULA or as prescribed in the PUR.

How can I run three instances of Windows on the one desktop? Purchase a Volume Licensing upgrade for your underlying Windows desktop operating system license. –You are now licensed for two instances of Windows. – You can purchase your third license for Windows through retail full packaged product (FPP) channel; or In addition to the Windows desktop operating system license that you acquired with your PC from your OEM, you can purchase your second and third license for Windows through retail full packaged product (FPP) channel. 22 Under volume licensing how many instances of Windows can I install in a virtual machine? You are only granted one additional instance. The host Windows operating system which is installed on your computer counts as the first instance of Windows. You are only granted one additional instance. The host Windows operating system which is installed on your computer counts as the first instance of Windows.

Can I use my two instances on two separate physical computers? No. You are granted rights to install up to two instances of Windows Professional on a single desktop for each Volume Licensing upgrade acquired. You may not use these rights to install Windows on two separate physical computers. No. You are granted rights to install up to two instances of Windows Professional on a single desktop for each Volume Licensing upgrade acquired. You may not use these rights to install Windows on two separate physical computers.

Do I need a device CAL for each instance of Windows accessing a Windows Server? No. One device CAL is all that is needed for multiple operating system instances on a single physical machine. In the case of a User CAL each person accessing the server through any client device must have a CAL. No. One device CAL is all that is needed for multiple operating system instances on a single physical machine. In the case of a User CAL each person accessing the server through any client device must have a CAL.

Can I install multiple copies of Office or other applications for each operating system instances installed? Yes. For each Microsoft Office or desktop applications license that was acquired through Volume Licensing customers have the right to install up to two instances of Office on one device for each license as long as the two installations of the desktop application are not accessed or used on more than one device. The second installation of Office or desktop application must be an older version of Office than the version licensed (e.g., license for Office 2003 Professional, and 2nd copy has to be Office XP Professional, Office 2000 Professional or an earlier version). Yes. 26 Can I remove an OEM version of Windows Professional and install it on a new computer? No. Under the Microsoft OEM and Volume License programs, Microsoft Windows Professional operating system licenses are tied to the machine on which they are first installed and may not be moved to another machine which has the virtual machine software installed.
