MICE Wrap-up Michael S. Zisman Center for Beam Physics Accelerator & Fusion Research Division Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICE Collaboration Meeting 19—RAL October 10, 2007

Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman2 Outline Introduction Meeting Goals Installation Meeting Items from Technical Board Beam Line Issues Cooling Channel Issues Detector Issues Simulation Issues Controls/DAQ Issues Commissioning Issues Uncertainties Final Remarks

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman3 Introduction (1) Progress continues —spectrometer solenoid fabrication well under way o first magnet ready for measurement by December 2007 o second magnet being wound —H 2 R&D system design under way o with due consideration of safety aspects —decay solenoid vacuum leak repaired SS1, nearly complete SS2 being wound Power supply and controller

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman4 Introduction (2) —Addendum to LBNL-HIT MOU now signed o conductor for magnets already ordered —hope for first CC in one year Kudos to Lin Jia, Li Wang, Mike Green, Derun Li, and Steve Virostek Issue: may need to pay duties on raw materials brought into China (  $150K-$200K cost increase)

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman5 Introduction (3) Strong team available to work on CC

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman6 Introduction (4) Continued progress on understanding beam line —G4BL dipole error fixed; quad discrepancy still not understood o may be related to 3 rd order octupole effect on large  beam —discrepancy between codes still 50% (7 vs. 11  mm-rad) o question whether  is being evaluated correctly (use ECALC9 for both?) —review planned later this year (a bit later than hoped for) Dipole edge focusing y x

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman7 Introduction (5) MICE Hall progress —quad refurbishment progressing well now...schedule very tight o coils not interchangeable between quads o not enough mirror plates; put quads without in center of triplets —Linde refrigerator work under way —likely need burglar-proof roof over DSA (radiation protection or PPS?) o need to watch out for constant “requirements creep” —overall assessment o have momentum, but still many jobs coming due at the last minute

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman8 Introduction (6) DAQ and initial complement of detectors getting ready for cosmic tests in November Plans for upcoming MICE meetings —February 19-22 2008 at RAL —early June 2008 (Daresbury/Cockcroft) —Harbin in October 2008 —February 2009 (US; Berkeley suggested)

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman9 Introduction (7) Got additional funding in US —$630K supplemental funds from DOE —$798K MRI (U-Miss) from NSF o need about $1.5M more from NFMCC over next 2 years to make our schedule DOE working to get NFMCC a higher baseline —which means more rapid progress on MICE o continuing resolutions are not helping

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman10 Goals for Meeting (1) General —priority issue o getting ready for beam in January 2008 –getting the hardware built, installed and running –organizing the collaboration for running the experiment  shift leaders, system “experts”, operations manuals —next most important o get ready for cosmic test in November (detector shakedown) Beam line —effort needed to: o get components installed and operational o finalize optics design (making progress) –resolve Turtle vs. G4BL discrepancy –define tuning/correction schemes, incl. collimators and control algorithms –develop commissioning plans

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman11 Goals for Meeting (2) Need beam line review before starting commissioning —plans under way; hopefully November or December Phase II —re-baseline cost estimate and schedule

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman12 MICO Meeting (1) Key issues raised —need to test PSI solenoid o cryogenics, magnetics, instrumentation —check all MICE Hall equipment for compatibility with magnetic fields o microswitches, electronics, tools, etc. –also watches and credit cards! —interface between diffuser and SS end plate needs to be finalized o prefer to minimize mechanical work after magnet is assembled —document all force calculations o magnets; end shields List of plans and schedules posted on “new” Technical Board page —http://mice.iit.edu/tb/

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman13 MICO Meeting (2) Selected action items —use lifting straps for spectrometer solenoid o add spreader bar o avoid lifting it with shield(s) attached —check alignment specification for Q1-Q3 o where do they point? –we think  40 mm above nominal beam center line in ISIS —decide on target orientation o along or normal to ISIS beam axis (does this effect loss monitors?) o hall has 50 Hz, not 60 Hz and only 440 V 3 , not 208 or 220 V 3  —measure SS both with and without iron disks (and TOF cage?) o need fringe fields as well as central field —what height adjustment is needed on modules? o SS, RFCC, AFC —need test of joint seal between modules —need procedure to ensure load bolts engaged before powering magnets

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman14 Items from Technical Board (1) PSI solenoid repair —must complete repair for installation during Christmas shutdown —Linde refrigerator is pacing item (under way) Beam line —review needed o scheduled November-December —need for collimators and correctors needs to be dealt with o not included in original scope Vacuum system —added category to WBS —need someone identified to deal with infrastructure aspects o need to have exhaust connection on roughing pump o interlocks, monitoring,... o suggest “KISS principle” as guideline

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman15 Items from Technical Board (2) FC module tender process —very well handled; recommend proceeding to contract with selected vendor —adopt pulse-tube cooler option for compatibility with remainder of cooling channel —ask vendor to (quickly) explore alternative conductor options o decide at intermediate review in 1-2 months Some items missing from WBS list of responsibilities —isolation window for tracker —radiation shutter o when does this need to be designed and installed? Working to update L3 schedules and milestones for all systems (“Phase 2” planning) —desire internal review in early December

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman16 Items from Technical Board (3) Place cryocooler compressors away from magnets —use 20 m hoses o provide means to move off beam line with cables connected –or disconnect compressor and reconnect after moving

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman17 Beam Line Issues (1) Practice taking out old target as if it is highly activated —Radiological Protection Assessment completed already Need to measure Spectrometer Solenoid —with shields and without Is DLC-coated target acceptable to ISIS? —for how many pulses? Understand production rate vs. loss rate in ISIS —made some progress here o key is agreement on acceptable ISIS loss rates —need “clean” target test where losses confined to last 1 ms of cycle Make sure diffuser mechanism safe under power failure —return to known state —also check piping space in this area (crowded)

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman18 Beam Line Issues (2) Upstream magnets need lots of work —vacuum, water, power, alignment —D1 chamber is “too close to the edge” o looks like 10% loss of “good muons” –need to decide whether this should be fixed

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman19 Cooling Channel Issues (1) Magnets —develop operational procedures for all devices o spectrometer solenoids, focus coils, coupling coils, absorbers —need final plan for magnetic mapping with field sensors —mapping must go from spectrometer to detectors –need an “extra” downstream shield set for Step 1 measurements —FC schedule looks late; can we do better? Absorbers —design work almost done at KEK o need funding to provide the actual components (~$65K ea.) H 2 R&D system —system being fabricated o will “bag” the cryostat rather than build fully double-sealed system o schedule has slipped a bit due to other priorities –test early in 2008

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman20 Cooling Channel Issues (2) RF —define method to measure voltage at 1% level o may require beam-based measurements to achieve this —need further thought on required interlocks —consider NEG pumps for MICE —can we run CC and Lab G magnets together at MTA? o Green to evaluate force limitations —testing of high power amplifier to be done at Daresbury spring 2008 o making progress, but schedule slipping Miscellaneous —still need owners for several items o radiation shield, tracker He windows, TOF cage —must update infrastructure needs for project o Chris Nelson will collect/update

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman21 Detector Issues (1) Understand 201 MHz RF backgrounds —MTA tests with Coupling Coil will tell us which regime we’ll be in o present indications are that we’ll be okay at 8 MV Decision on TOF2 shielding —baseline: shield individual tubes CKOV —problems coating mirrors o do we need thicker aerogel? Tracker —get ready for cosmic ray testing Need safety procedure for rigging work after equipment installed in the hall

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman22 Detector Issues (2) Spectrometer solenoid schedule roughly holding —anticipate first magnet ready to measure at Fermilab January 2008 o ship to RAL mid-March 2008 –second one 3 months later —verify that quench forces on end plate have been accounted for —need to fiducialize magnets for alignment purposes o NIKEF should send someone to FNAL for initial measurements –delayed until January 2008 o must test radiation tolerance of sensors at MTA

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman23 Detector Issues (3) TOFs —need means to align in situ o ±1 mm tolerance KL —good progress o expected at RAL in December SW calorimeter —Trieste/Rome/Fermilab/Geneva group (Pietro Chimenti) has taken on o needed for Step 3 –should review cost and schedule when ready o do not compromise performance to save 30k€ Check quench forces for ALL systems

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman24 Simulation/Analysis Issues Sandström has re-estimated RF backgrounds in TOF —may be much worse than previously anticipated due to “avalanche” electrons from Be windows Need to learn how to correlate particles with RF phase —could we use ISIS RF signal to develop/validate approach? Should we do a “blind” analysis? Want specification of what field maps are needed —e.g., spectrometer solenoid Define and document alignment tolerances Can/should we keep TRD updated? —a parameter list would also be useful, especially to engineers

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman25 Controls/DAQ Issues (1) Data acquisition system ready for test with cosmic rays —schedule of November is tight, but important —need to demonstrate software is “professor-proof” o already a publishable result (?) —need to test shaper and have trigger ready by November Target software needs to be integrated into both ISIS and MICE systems —discussion started o need dip depth in our data stream DAQ has lots of jargon for the uninitiated —create glossary —need operations manual o better written by a knowledgeable user than the designer

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman26 Controls/DAQ Issues (2) Splitter sticking out of crate looks vulnerable to damage —repackage, provide cage, or buy collision insurance Send SS power supplies to Daresbury for testing with control system —use same supplies for FC module o possible in-kind contribution? Need guru as liaison between systems and controls group Need system manager to deal with keeping systems running, upgrades and backups,... —not full-time, but a critical role —could be a MICE contribution —pay from common fund?

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman27 Commissioning Issues Common funds will be due at RAL soon Please explore visa and housing issues as long-term visits become more commonplace —contact is Susan Ketels (S.K.Ketels@rl.ac.uk) Recall that WE are responsible for training our people —and being able to verify that they are trained —see http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/usertraining to get started Initial run coordinators —Blondel: November 15 – December 17, 2007 —Zisman: January 15 – February 15, 2008 Note: No system should be left unattended. Our folks must be there!

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman28 Uncertainties Can we get funds for Ishimoto’s absorber work? —Japan group has major proposal in that would cover this —pushing for renewed US-Japan funds for this o next round of negotiations starts in December Do we have the “person-power” to cover experimental shifts? —and analyze the data in a timely way (“exploitation” phase) —several post-doc slots available but unfilled Are items from the MICE Hall considered radioactive in terms of handling and transport? —absorber windows, diffuser disks, cavity Be windows —detectors: TOFs, CKOV, tracker planes, KL, SW

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman29 Final Remarks MICE management remains grateful for the hard work of the collaboration Welcome to Richard Apsimon and Andy Nichols —please cooperate with their requests in a complete and timely fashion We continue to make progress —the rush to get everything built and installed continues o we have had a few setbacks and continue to recover gracefully Be vigilant about opportunities to publicize MICE Now 102 days to target date for Step 1

October 10, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman30 Kudos Thanks to Marco Apollonio and John Cobb (CM19 organizers) —very well organized meeting in all aspects; good discussions Thanks to Ken Long for stepping into the Technical Coordinator’s role so vigorously and effectively Welcome back to Ulisse Bravar —good luck to Yury Ivanyushenkov, who is moving on Congratulations to Stephanie Yang —for passing her UK driving test —and (with Wing Lau) for helping “recruit” (by CM20) our youngest member of the MICE collaboration See you at RAL...again
