SECTION A Reading Section – 20 MARKS Reading Unseen passages for comprehension and note- making: This section will have two unseen passages followed by a variety of questions. The total range of the two passages including a poem or a stanza, should be around 900-1000 words. (12 marks) Reading passage of 550-600 words for note- making and summarizing. (8 marks) a) Note making - 5 marks b) Summary – 3 marks

SECTION B [Writing & Grammar] WRITING– 20 MARKS One out of two short writing/composition tasks based on notice/poster/advertisement. Writing one out of two letters based on verbal input. It would cover all types of letters. One out of two questions in the form of article, speech, report writing or a narrative. [4 Marks] [6 Marks] [10 Marks]

GRAMMAR – 10 MARKS Different grammatical structures in meaningful contexts will be tested. Item types will include gap filling, sentence re-ordering, dialogue completion, and sentence transformation. Grammar syllabus includes Determiners, Tenses, Clauses, Modals, and Change of Voice. These grammar areas will be tested using the following short answer type and MCQ type questions. Error Correction – (04 marks) Editing Task – (04 marks) Re-ordering of sentences – (02 marks)

SECTION C Literature and Long Reading Text [30 marks] Questions to test comprehension at different levels: literal, inferential and evaluative. Types of Questions: Very Short Answer questions [from poetry] Short Answer questions [from poetry and prose] Long Answer questions [from prose] Value Based questions [from prose] Long Reading Text / Novel : With a view to inculcate the habit of reading among the students, CBSE has introduced compulsory reading of a Long Reading Text – Novel in the English Core Course which will be evaluated in the Term-end assessments.

Assessment of Speaking and Listening Skills (ASL) [20 Marks] CBSE had introduced the formal assessment of speaking and listening skills in Class XI with effect from the session 2012-13. As a part of the school based assessment, it is believed that assessment should be used to control and regulate the quality and also to maintain the desired standards of performance in specific areas of learning. As good communication skills raise the self esteem and give students confidence to face the challenges of life, it is desired that the student acquires proficiency in it by the time he or she completes secondary education. In the present time, speaking and listening are considered to be the essential global skills of learning a language, which are extensively used in one’s life. Hence, the formal assessment of Speaking and Listening skills has been added in the overall assessment scheme.
