Joseph Smith 1805 -1844 Experienced little involvement with religion during his youth Founder of the Latter Day Saints Mission was to restore original Christianity Received visions from the angel Moroni Found and translated the book of Mormon Believed in The Bible and The Book of Mormon Believed that the Lord Jesus Christ will come to earth again Did not allow drinking of alcohol, coffee, tea, or the smoking of tobacco led the Mormons through Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois Was the first latter-day prophet Helped create the city of Nauvoo He was killed by a mob in Illinois

Brigham Young 1801- 1877 Second prophet of the Latter Day Saints 1847 -President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Took over after the death of Joseph Smith Led the Mormons westward towards Salt Lake City Believed in polygamy Had an estimated 50 wives and 57 children Large figure in the growth of the American West 1849 - Established the provisional state of Deseret later named Utah Young was the governor

Worship Space of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints See temples as a fulfillment of a prophecy The Kirtland Temple Many gothic styled buildings Buildings were originally very extravaggant but are now much more simple Angel Moroni on top of every temple Each room represents progression The baptistry is always the lowest room of the temple Ordinance rooms are elevated The Celestial room which is the highest in the church

Worship Space Continued Accommodate up to 3,500 people Hall is fitted with enclosed pews with two aisles running down its the length Pews for a band and choir Pulpits at different levels for the different rankings of leaders in the church Each pulpit had initials identifying the priesthood office of the occupant Along the arch of the ceiling, are the words "The Lord Has Seen Our Sacrifice - Come After Us.“

Worship Practice Weekly worship services on Sundays Sacrament services You do not have to be a member of the Church to attend members encouraged to participate in services and ordinances Women, Men, and children are expected to dress appropriately Sacrament: The Lord’s Supper is done every service Sacrament is blessed by the Priest by saying a special prayer Passed out by deacon to congregation Separate prayer said over wine Reminder of their commitment to follow Jesus Christ, and a plea for forgiveness of sins

Worship Practice: Articles of Faith We believe in God, his Son, and the Holly Spirit We believe you will only be punished for your sins not the original sin Through the anointment of Christ all mankind may be saved if they are obedient to the rules and ordinances of the gospel Ordinances are: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Repentance, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, lying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. We believe that a man must be called of God by prophesy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority We believe organization that existed in the primitive church We believe in tongues, prophesy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues and so forth. We believe the bible to be the word of God as well as the book of Mormon We believe all that God reveals important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes We believe in the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. We believe in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men
