Obtaining a Social Security Number: Steps 1 - 3 To Apply for a Social Security Number you must: Step 1: Attend the Social Security Seminar Step 2: Complete I-9 Employment Verification with Student Employment Office in 210 Steele Hall (for your convenience, Steps 2 and 3 can be done simultaneously). Step 3: To be eligible to apply for a Social Security Number, you must be employed or have a promise of employment, which is shown by the Employer Verification Form. Your host department must complete Part A of the Employer Verification Form and print it out on their department letterhead.Employer Verification Form Next, Student Employment in 210 Steele Hall must complete Part B of the Employer Verification Form to verify completion of the I-9. Obtaining a Social Security Number: Steps 4 - 5 Step 4: Before you can submit an application to the Social Security Administration for a SSN, you must have entered the U.S. on your current visa more than 10 days ago and be registered in the SEVIS System for at least 3 days and wait for the SCIS to give you a date to go down to the Social Security Administration Office. Step 5: Apply for the SSN - Go to the Social Security Administration on the 4th floor, Federal Building, 100 S. Clinton Street, Syracuse, NY. Submit 1 copy of your SSN Application Receipt to the Slutzker Center with your SU ID number written on the copy. Step 7: Upon receiving your Social Security Card by mail, submit 1 copy of your card with your SU ID to the Slutzker Center for International Services, 310 Walnut Place Step 8: For tax purposes, complete the Non-Resident Alien Information Form (NRAIF) online at https://fnis.windstar.cc/syracuse/ https://fnis.windstar.cc/syracuse/ To obtain access, email Payroll at payroll@syr.edu with your SU ID number.payroll@syr.edu NRAIF is necessary to verify eligibility for a tax withholding exemption All questions about NRAIF should be directed to SU Payroll Step 6: When applying for the SSN, request a RECEIPT for your application. Obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) For those individuals who receive income through grants and scholarships from US sources but who are not employed and thus not eligible for a SSN, the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is an alternative to the Social Security Number. Typically, this will apply to Student Athletes, those who receive a stipend, and other US based grant recipients. To qualify to apply for an ITIN immediately, you must: Not be eligible for a Social Security Number Receive a grant, scholarship, or stipend from a US source that is subject to tax withholdings NOTE: Those F-1 and J-1 students who are independently funded or funded by their home government and are not working are eligible for an ITIN under reason “F,” and F-2 and J-2 dependent spouse and children are also eligible for an ITIN under reason “G,” but may only file for the ITIN when filing an end-year tax return with the IRS. Step 3: Apply for the ITIN - Go to the IRS office on the 11th floor, Federal Building, 100 S. Clinton Street, Syracuse, NY. Take the ITIN Letter from SCIS, your original passport, I-20/DS-2019, visa and I-94 card You will need to fill out a W-7 Application for an ITIN to submit to the IRS Office: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdfhttp://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf W-7 Form Instructions are here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdfhttp://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf Under the Eligibility Section of the W-7 Form, select both “F” and “H. Other” and enter one of the valid exceptions listed on pages 6-8 of the W-7 Instructions. In most instances, a F-1 or J-1 student on a US grant, scholarship or stipend will be eligible under Exceptions 2(b) or 2(c) on page 7 of the W-7 Instructions. Reminders To download forms and find more information on immigration topics, access the Slutzker Center website at: http://international.syr.edu/ Keep all of your immigration and employment documents together and in a safe place—you may need them for future immigration applications (e.g., OPT or J-1 Academic Training) -- I-20/DS-2019, Passport, Visa with I-94 card -- Social Security Card -- Employment Contract, Pay Stubs Check all of the expiration dates on your documents and be aware of when they expire. -- Your I-9 is valid until your I-20/DS-2019 program end date. If you shorten/extend your program, verify with the Slutzker Center that your document will be submitted to HR for an I-9 update. Plan ahead and make necessary appointments to renew and update documents
