Historically, the information systems function was organized internally accorfing to the major technology based activities that had to be performed. Typically, a centralized data processing or information systems department was established within organizations.

Today, the way the information systems function is organized internally can take many forms.

If a centralized information systems department does exist, the auditor would not want to see it still structured internally along traditional lines, unless perhaps it plays only a back office support role.
