Who was Columbus? Was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 Worked with his father until the age of 22 then set out to follow his dream of becoming a sea captain Columbus began to educate himself learning to read and speak Portuguese and Latin. He read many geography books trying gather all the information he could about the world.

Who was Columbus? He became a chart maker himself and because of these studies became convinced that the world was spherical, round instead of flat. In 1479 Columbus married Dona Felipa Perestrello, whose father had been one of Prince Henry Navigator's captains. His wife's social rank opened doors for Columbus. They had one child named Diego

What did he Want to do? Asia offered many goods Europeans wanted but traveling east to get them was difficult and dangerous. Columbus wanted to discover the much sought to route to the east that would open up a lucrative trade. He believed there was a better way to find it then traveling around the tip of Africa

What did he do? He believed by sailing west 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean that he would come full circle and end up in Asia without having to go south and east. After being rejected many times he finally convinced the King and Queen of Spain to finance him and at dawn on Aug. 3, 1492, the three ships (the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria) set sail.

Finding Land October 12, 1492, a seaman aboard the Pinta, spotted land. Columbus actually had landed among the Bahama Islands. He named this land San Salvador, claiming it in the name of Spain. This NEW World would lead to the settlement by Europeans of the continents of North and South America.

Life on the Ship Life on the ships was hard work. They didn’t have many supplies They were constantly battling sickness and disease. The menu for seamen consisted of : -Water-Cheese-Beans -Vinegar-Fish -Sardines -Wine-Rice-Anchovies -Olive oil-Lentils-Salted meats Food, mostly boiled, was served in a large wooden bowl. Sailors would attack it, picking it with their fingers as they had no forks or spoons.

The Effect Finding the “New World” changed history and our lives forever. Columbus' expedition was unique and important in that it resulted in the first mixing of Europeans with the America and its people, resulting in the first permanent European colonies in the New World. Paved the way for other explorers
