2 Overview  The teaching team  How am I going to grade you?  When are you going to do it?  What are we going to cover?  Why you should not take this course?

6 Late Policy  Any late submission will be rejected and given zero mark (unless otherwise stated)  Under very special circumstances, you may be eligible for Special Consideration –Apply through faculty –Need to submit work with your application for consideration

7 Textbook  Data and Computer Communications, 2003 7th edition,William Stallings, Pearson-Prentice Hall  Recommended Book:  Data Communications and Networking, 2004 3rd Edition, B. A. Forouzan, McGraw-Hill

8 Prerequisites & Assumed Knowledge  Good programming and problem solving skills of SOFT1001 is required  High-school mathematics (especially algebra) necessary

9 Tentative Lesson Schedule Data Communications and Networking Overview (B) 1 Protocol Architecture (B)1 Data Transmission (B)2 Guided and Wireless Transmission (B) 3 Signal Encoding (B)4 Data Link Control (B)5 Local Area Network Overview (B/J) 6-7

10 Tentative Lesson Schedule (cont.) High-Speed LANs (J/B)8-9 Circuit Switching and Packet Switching (J) 10 Routing (J)11 Internetwork Protocols (J)12 Transport and Management Protocols (J) 13 Note: (K) – Bjorn (J) – Jahan

11 What Is This Unit About?  This is a course on Networking Architecture  This is not a course on network building or usage  You will be able to understand protocols  You will learn about networking concepts that will help you understand networking jargon: –TCP/IP and OSI Models –Flow Control –Error Control –Baud, Hertz, and Bits/sec –Algorithms for determining packet routes  This is the first course on networking.  Sets foundation for NETS3303 (now NETS3007)

12 Why You Shouldn’t take this unit?  You aren’t ready for the hard work  You don’t have the background  You are not ready to take the initiative –Only key concepts will be covered in the class. –Students are expected to read the rest from the text.  This does not cover what you want
