Does your dorm have what it takes?

What is Eco-Madness? Eco-Madness is a water and energy conservation competition. The competition will run from September 27th- October 24 th. Each of the buildings in Buckley, East, Northwest, Towers, Shippee, and West will compete against each other to see which individual residence hall can save the most energy and water, on a per- person, per-day basis.
3
Why participate in Eco- Madness? By conserving energy, YOU can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are harming our climate system. UConn’s water consumption has previously contributed to the drying up of part of the Fenton River. By saving water, you can help avoid this. If your building can save the most water and energy, you will receive a FREE Dairy Bar Ice Cream Party and Energy or Water Offset Certificate!
4
How can YOU help? Become an Eco-Captain! – Eco-Captains are representatives from each building who motivate their peers to conserve water and energy! – Eco-Captains have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes, based on their efforts to promote the competition. *To become an Eco-Captain, please email catherine.pomposi@uconn.edu

Tips for conserving energy Turn off all appliances when leaving a room. Use natural light, or just do it in the dark. Use CFL bulbs; CFLs use about ¼ the amount of energy as regular incandescent ones Beware of the Phantom Load- items such as cell phone chargers, computers, and TVs continue to consume energy EVEN WHEN THEY ARE TURNED OFF! -Save energy simply by UNPLUGGING!

More tips for conserving energy Try washing your clothes with cold water. Most clothes can be washed with cold water and this avoids unnecessary electricity to heat water for laundry! Use EnergyStar appliances! Turn your computer settings to “hibernate” or “sleep” mode instead of using a screen saver.

Tips for conserving water Keep showers short! This simple action can save between 5-10 gallons of water per minute! Turn off the faucet when not in use. Try turning off the shower head when shampooing or shaving. Only run laundry when you have a full load. Report leaks in your building to an RA immediately!

More tips for conserving water Don’t shower everyday unless really necessary. Do not throw tissues or other garbage into the toilet. This requires extra flushing which wastes water. Usually you can wear some items more than once before they require a wash; try this technique to save water!
