What Millennials Do About Finances n 77% received some form of financial assistance from their parents for school n 52% received more than $1,500 for last year’s college expenses from parents n 35% have no worries about how their education will be funded n 6% work full-time while attending school n 46% have a part-time job while attending school

Millennials’ Social Views n 87% believe a man is not entitled to sex on a date n 40% think that unmarried sex is OK for two people who “like each other” n 51% agree that abortion should be legal n 49% say same-sex couples receive legal protection and recognized status n 83% say the federal government should do more to control handguns n 73% say there is too much concern in our society for criminals n 23.5% of white freshmen characterized helping to promote racial understanding as essential or very important, 54.8% of blacks and 43.6% of Latinos felt that way. Personal Qualities Needed for Persistence and Achievement n Motivation –Motivation is the process of generating and directing one’s time and energy toward one’s goals. n Confidence –Confidence is the belief that you have the ability to achieve despite frustrations and discouragements. n A Sense of Direction and Goals –Having a sense of direction provides a target for one’s investment of time and energy. n Strategies for Achieving –Strategies are the methods one uses to complete the tasks and demands needed to achieve one’s goals.

Work on Your Strengths, Not Your Weaknesses n Most learning theories are “deficit-based.” That is, “fixing your weaknesses.” n Current research on high achievers found that they: –Build their lives around their strengths. –They invent ways to use their strengths to make themselves effective. –They just try to manage their weaknesses.

Talents versus Strengths n A talent is a specific quality that enables a person to do certain things very well, and ultimately make you more effective. n A strength is a talent that has been developed to a point that consistently provides near-perfect performance. n Is it possible to have a talent that is not a strength? –Talents are meaningless until they are honed into a strength. n Is it possible to have a strength that is not a talent? –Yes, but it can kill you in the process. Most people try to do this.
