Mott Foundation. 18 There are multiple rationales for requiring matching funds: Provision of resources by the university and/or commercial partner is the strongest indicator of the priority and anticipated value of the project. Matching is a tangible demonstration of the leveraging value of the Foundation funding. More projects can be completed as a consequence of enlarging the resource pool via matching. The match and repayment plan must not be so high as to discourage university and industry participation because the risk/reward ratio appears imbalanced.
