3 A Tropical Depression is a thunderstorm that has wind speeds below 38 miles per hour. There is no “eye” … yet. Tropical Depressions

4 Tropical Storms A Tropical Depression turns into a Tropical Storm when its wind speeds reach 38 miles per hour. But…it’s not a hurricane…yet. Its wind speeds are still below 74 miles per hour. The “eye” is starting to become more clear.

5 Hurricanes A Tropical Storm turns into a hurricane when its wind speeds reach above 74 miles per hour. Its wind speeds can go up to 200 miles per hour! The “eye” of the storm is calm.
