1 Information Services What is referencing? In academic writing, “referencing” is: acknowledging a direct source of information used (e.g. a quotation); or acknowledging a source of supportive information used.

2 Information Services Two parts of referencing… Citations Citations are “in-text” references, e.g.: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The hip bone is a large, flattened, irregularly shaped bone, constricted in the center and expanded above and below (Gray, H., 1910). It meets its fellow on the opposite side in the middle line in front, and together they form the sides and anterior wall of the pelvic cavity.
